The Hermit

Descriptions and symbolism are based on the card’s classic illustration in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. Details of the artwork may differ in other editions of the deck.

This guide brings together traditional and modern readings. Interpretations and answers may differ between authors and schools.

Go to meanings
The Hermit

The Hermit has already climbed to a great height and now raises his light. In Waite's depiction, this is someone who has reached a place others are still striving toward. His lantern shows that the journey can be made. The star inside is not hidden beneath his cloak: the old man holds it out before him, above the snowy summit.

He cannot make the climb for another person, but he can help someone on the path see where to go. There is a quiet generosity in this gesture. The landscape remains empty, his head is bowed, and his staff rests against the ground—yet his light reaches beyond his solitude. From a distance, it may be visible before the person holding the lantern comes into view.

Core meaning

The Hermit connects solitude with the search for your own answers, thoughtful caution, and mature understanding. His light can guide both the seeker and others who need an experienced guide.

Image and symbols

Card image

An elderly man stands on a snowy summit, wearing a long gray hooded cloak. His head is bowed and turned to the viewer's left; his white beard falls to his chest.

In his raised right hand, on the viewer's left, he holds a lantern containing a yellow six-pointed star. His left hand grips a long yellow staff resting in the snow. Jagged mountain outcrops appear below, with an even blue-gray background behind the figure.

Traditional context

For Waite, The Hermit represents, above all, knowledge already attained. He stands at a height he has reached and raises his light for others seeking to follow. Waite associates the figure with the Ancient of Days, a biblical image of eternal wisdom, and with the Light of the World. The lantern is not hidden under his cloak.

Waite's divinatory list is broader than this symbolic explanation. Upright, he includes prudence and circumspection, but also treason, dissimulation, roguery, and corruption. Reversed, he lists concealment, disguise, calculated tactics, fear, and unreasonable caution. These are historical possibilities for interpretation, not grounds for accusing anyone.

Modern references give more attention to self-discovery, independent reflection, and mentorship. The reversed card is not read only as isolation: it may also suggest avoiding an inner conversation or returning to others after a period of solitude.

In Sergey Savchenko's approach, withdrawal and limited exchange with others are more pronounced; in material matters, the emphasis shifts from growth to preserving what is already there. This is a more reserved reading than the image of a mentor open to dialogue.

This context applies to both upright and reversed positions.

An elderly man with a white beard

An image of mature wisdom. Waite associates him with the Ancient of Days; for Case, the white beard also evokes timeless wisdom.

Bowed head and downturned face

In a modern reading, this posture conveys attention focused on an inner question rather than on events around him.

Raised lantern

The light of understanding gained through experience. It helps him find his own way and serves as a sign to others; Waite emphasizes that the lantern is not concealed.

Six-pointed star inside the lantern

In modern RWS symbolism, it is called the Seal of Solomon and associated with wisdom.

Staff in the left hand

Support, composure, and the ability to maintain balance. In a modern reading, it also represents accumulated experience that can be relied upon.

Long hooded cloak

The covering separates the figure from the bustle of the outside world. In Case's Hermetic explanation, it also expresses the hidden nature of the divine principle.

Snow-covered mountain summit

The height of understanding already attained. The Hermit stands at the summit; in this reading, the climb behind him and the experience gained along the way matter.

Colors

  • Gray — cloak and hood

In modern interpretation, the gray emphasizes simplicity, restraint, and detachment from outward temptations and status.

  • White — snow at his feet

In a modern reading, it can suggest purity of thought and action.

  • Yellow — staff

A modern reading of the color associates it with intellect and wisdom. Here, the color accent reinforces the staff itself as a symbol of support.

  • Blue-gray — background behind the figure

The muted background may represent silence and attention undisturbed by outside impressions.

  • Yellow — star in the lantern

The warm light suggests the clarity available now: seeing the next step can be enough, even when the road farther ahead remains dark.

Meanings

The Hermit — Upright

General

Overall meaning

The Hermit marks a time when understanding what is happening may be more useful than rushing to an answer. Stepping back from outside noise helps separate your own understanding from other people's opinions.

The card may also represent an experienced mentor or your own role as a guide to others. Solitude here serves the search for clarity, while maturity allows knowledge to be shared without making someone else's decisions.

Possible support

A mentor who helps you ask precise questions and find your own answer may offer support.

Possible difficulty

Even meaningful solitude can last too long. Reflection then begins to replace participation in life, and returning to connection becomes harder.

Focus

Distinguish your own answer from a wish to gain others' approval.

Reflection questions
  • What question do I need to consider without anyone else's advice?
  • Who helps me work things out without deciding for me?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In a romantic question, The Hermit may point to a pause to understand your own needs. For someone who is single, it leaves room for an independent life; for partners, it raises the subject of personal space and a thoughtful conversation about what matters to both.

In friendships and family, the card may describe a temporary need for time apart or the involvement of an experienced loved one whose advice invites reflection.

Possible support

A relationship can be strengthened by discussing needs and hopes together, even when the conversation starts awkwardly.

Possible difficulty

A wish for time alone may meet a fear of growing distant from loved ones or be mistaken for rejecting the relationship.

Focus

Clarify how much personal space you need and how you can stay connected.

Reflection questions
  • What do I need to understand about my expectations in relationships?
  • How can I explain my need for time alone to someone close to me?

Work and study

Overall meaning

In work and study, The Hermit is associated with in-depth research, independent learning, and attention to quality. A student-mentor relationship or the sharing of your own expertise may also be relevant.

Another meaning concerns career direction: beyond pay and stability, the question of why you want to do this work comes to the forefront.

Possible support

Quiet, focused study and a mentor whose practical experience you can learn from can help.

Possible difficulty

Trying to find immediate certainty amid other people's opinions can drown out your own judgment about work.

Focus

When considering a change, check whether the work you want fits your interests and long-term goals.

Reflection questions
  • What matters to me about my work besides pay?
  • What subject do I want to explore more deeply?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

The Hermit invites you to reconsider the role of money in your life: what truly brings satisfaction, and what merely adds more possessions? A practical reading involves reflecting on spending and long-term material goals, rather than seeking quick results.

Possible support

Careful consideration of your circumstances and what past financial decisions have taught you can provide support.

Possible difficulty

Spending may be an attempt to fill an emotional void. Material concerns may then occupy more attention than they contribute to understanding your actual needs.

Focus

Compare current spending with what you truly need and with your long-term plans.

Reflection questions
  • Which purchases reflect what truly matters to me?
  • How do I distinguish something I need from a purchase meant to lift my mood?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

The card may suggest a need for quiet and time to process your feelings. In an everyday reading, rest, sleep, and slowing down come to the fore, rather than continuing to push through fatigue.

Possible support

Quiet rest and a brief break from outside noise may offer support.

Possible difficulty

Solitude may become a habit of handling everything alone, even when support is needed.

Focus

The focus is on your need for rest and the chance to notice feelings that get lost amid everyday demands.

Reflection questions
  • When can I rest without conversation or new stimulation?
  • What feeling would I like to give some quiet attention to?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

The Hermit is associated with reconsidering your values, principles, and direction in life. Solitude creates room to notice which answers are truly your own.

Self-discovery also includes an uncomfortable question: is time alone helping you understand yourself, or serving as a way to avoid difficult feelings and connection? Experience gained can be reflected on and shared with others.

Possible support

It helps to listen to your own understanding while remaining connected to people you can learn from.

Possible difficulty

Solitude may serve as protection from a difficult feeling: outwardly it looks like reflection, but the question itself remains untouched.

Focus

Notice what makes you pull away from people: a wish to understand something or difficulty asking for support.

Reflection questions
  • What matters to me regardless of other people's expectations?
  • Is time alone helping me understand, or postpone a difficult question?

The Hermit — Reversed

General

Overall meaning

The Hermit reversed may show that solitude is no longer bringing clarity: thoughts repeat, while connections with people and opportunities for help grow weaker. The opposite imbalance is also possible, when constant busyness leaves no room for an honest conversation with yourself.

Another reading is a return from solitude. After inner work, it is time to test what you have learned through connection and action rather than continuing the search indefinitely.

Possible support

A willingness to ask for advice and make room for another perspective in your thinking may offer support.

Possible difficulty

A closed loop of reflection without action may be an obstacle, especially when every suggestion is rejected in advance.

Focus

Consider whether the distance you have chosen brings fresh understanding or merely postpones facing the question.

Reflection questions
  • What new understanding am I gaining by continuing to think this over?
  • What help can I accept while keeping the decision my own?

Relationships

Overall meaning

Unwanted loneliness and emotional distance are different from chosen time alone. For partners, the card may reflect too little communication or differing needs for closeness. Sometimes fear of being alone keeps a relationship going even while its difficulties remain unspoken.

In friendships and family, withdrawal may mean people share less and understand each other less well. The direction of change is toward restoring conversation, not necessarily giving up personal space.

Possible support

A conversation that makes room for your feelings and your loved one's response may help.

Possible difficulty

When feelings remain unspoken, distance may grow, and silence may take the place of efforts to understand one another.

Focus

Consider whether both partners have enough time alone or whether the distance has become painful for one of them.

Reflection questions
  • How can I explain my need for connection?
  • What is harder for me right now: being apart or talking about my feelings?

Work and study

Overall meaning

At work, the card may describe unproductive isolation: too little contact with colleagues, rejection of feedback, or a lost sense of professional direction. Sometimes a person ends up working alone without choosing to. The opposite imbalance is depending so heavily on colleagues' opinions that your own judgment gets lost.

Another reading concerns returning after a period of reflection. Goals become clearer, and there is a readiness to learn from others again, collaborate, and put thoughtful conclusions into practice.

Possible support

Feedback, professional connections, and a mentor's help in clarifying direction can provide support.

Possible difficulty

Difficulty arises when work is confined to your own perspective or, conversely, when you struggle to form an opinion without others' approval.

Focus

If your current job no longer satisfies you, consider what you might change there before taking an entirely new direction.

Reflection questions
  • When does feedback help me, and when do other people's opinions become too much?
  • Which of my ideas could I discuss with a colleague or mentor?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

In financial matters, The Hermit reversed may indicate excessive caution, a prolonged decision, or reluctance to consider informed advice. It can also suggest dependence on other people's opinions, leaving your own understanding of expenses and acceptable risk unclear.

In another reading, a period of analysis is coming to an end: there is a readiness to assess your financial circumstances with outside input and move toward practical consideration of your plans.

Possible support

Combining your own understanding with an informed outside perspective helps more than handing the entire decision to someone else.

Possible difficulty

Caution can turn into fear of any change, while the desire for independence may make it harder to seek needed help.

Focus

Check which outside information and professional explanations have been missing from your own financial assessment.

Reflection questions
  • Am I delaying a financial decision solely out of caution?
  • What explanation am I missing that would help me decide for myself?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

In everyday well-being, the card may suggest loneliness that no longer feels restorative or difficulty reaching out for support. The opposite extreme is also possible: avoiding quiet and your own feelings even though a pause is needed.

Attention turns to connection with yourself and with people who can help you avoid carrying everything alone.

Possible support

A calm conversation with someone you can tell how you feel may offer support.

Possible difficulty

The difficulty may be shutting others out so that needed support stays out of reach, or continually distracting yourself from your feelings.

Focus

Notice what is missing right now: rest without outside noise, or human contact that has become too scarce.

Reflection question

When does quiet help me, and when does it deepen loneliness?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

The inner search can become stuck between two extremes: endless reflection and distraction from uncomfortable questions. Seeking an answer from someone else can also drown out your own understanding.

The Hermit reversed is also linked to experience that has not yet become part of your actions. Returning to others and applying what you have already understood may matter more than another retreat into thought.

Possible support

A lesson you have already learned may offer support if you use it in your current choice instead of merely remembering it.

Possible difficulty

Reflection loses its purpose when past experience is acknowledged in words but the way you act remains unchanged.

Focus

Notice the question you want to avoid and the understanding that is ready to move beyond reflection.

Reflection questions
  • What past experience could change my present choice?
  • Is there a question I keep distracting myself from even though I want to understand it?

Roles in a spread

Position examples

A position gives the card a question, such as what helps or what gets in the way. That question shapes how you read its meaning.

The Hermit — Upright

Situation

The situation calls for independent reflection. External activity may give way to studying the question and clarifying your own understanding.

Influence

An experienced person may be an important influence, offering observations that prompt you to reconsider your direction and explore the question more deeply.

Motivation

The motivation is a wish to understand for yourself rather than settle for a ready-made answer. This may require time alone.

Support

As a source of support, the card offers sound judgment and guidance from a mentor who does not make your choices for you.

Obstacle

In the obstacle position, The Hermit can point to prolonged self-examination or solitude that masks avoidance of the situation.

Focus of attention

Your own principles and direction deserve attention: what still matters when others' expectations temporarily recede?

Next step

Step away from outside noise and calmly examine your own thoughts, feelings, and experience before choosing what to do next.

Possible development

If you maintain a thoughtful approach, progress may come through deeper exploration and a gradual clarification of your personal bearings, rather than a faster pace of outward activity.

The Hermit — Reversed

Situation

Reflection may turn into a closed loop, while solitude becomes imposed or painful. Sometimes the difficulty is the opposite: an inner question is repeatedly put off.

Influence

The situation may be influenced by others' withdrawal or by valuable advice that is misunderstood or rejected.

Motivation

The motivation may be a wish to emerge from prolonged loneliness, participate in life again, and maintain connections with others.

Support

Seeking help rather than insisting on working everything out alone may provide support.

Obstacle

Withdrawing from connection and help, or thinking that never leads to action, becomes an obstacle.

Focus of attention

Consider which lesson you already know but are not taking into account in your current decision.

Next step

Reconnect with others, discuss what you have learned, and try putting your insights into practice.

Possible development

If distance continues to grow, solitude may deepen a sense of disconnection. More open exchange and a willingness to seek support offer another direction to consider.

Combination examples

Card combinations are in development. For now, here are a few examples.

The Hermit + The Magician

The Hermit ( upright) + The Magician ( upright)

Example question:
What should I focus on when developing an idea?
Example interpretation:

The Hermit channels The Magician's initiative into deeper study and refining your own approach. The pairing highlights careful preparation rather than rushing to show results.

The Hermit + The High Priestess

The Hermit ( upright) + The High Priestess ( upright)

Example question:
What does this pair emphasize in an inner search?
Example interpretation:

The cards reinforce turning inward and stepping away from external distractions. Their central emphasis is on paying attention to inner understanding.

The Hermit + Four of Swords

The Hermit ( upright) + Four of Swords ( upright)

Example question:
What approach to reflection does this combination suggest?
Example interpretation:

The Four of Swords strengthens the quiet, contemplative side of The Hermit. Calm reflection remains at the center of this reading.

The Hermit + Eight of Cups

The Hermit ( upright) + Eight of Cups ( upright)

Example question:
What kind of search connects these cards?
Example interpretation:

The pair emphasizes a search for deeper meaning. That shared theme does not necessarily mean literally leaving a particular situation.

The Hermit + Three of Cups

The Hermit ( upright) + Three of Cups ( upright)

Example question:
How do solitude and time with others relate?
Example interpretation:

The Three of Cups highlights being with others, while The Hermit emphasizes solitude. Together, they invite you to consider these differing needs without treating either as wrong.

Reading example

An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.

The Hermit — Upright

  1. Situation:

You have an offer to move to another job. Much about your current role is familiar, but your interest in it has faded. Your loved ones give conflicting advice, and talking with them leaves your own decision no clearer.

  2. Question:

What will help me understand which job to choose?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help Me Choose» and getting The Hermit (upright).

  4. Interpretation:

The Hermit invites you to understand your choice apart from other people's advice. Here, the point is not to immediately accept the offer or stay, but to understand what is missing in your current work and what attracts you to the new role.

You might first put your own reasons into words, then discuss specific questions with someone experienced, without asking that person to choose for you.

The Hermit — Reversed

  1. Situation:

You have an offer to move to another job. Much about your current role is familiar, but your interest in it has faded. Your loved ones give conflicting advice, and talking with them leaves your own decision no clearer.

  2. Question:

What will help me understand which job to choose?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help Me Choose» and getting The Hermit (reversed).

  4. Interpretation:

The Hermit reversed invites you to notice reflection that is no longer bringing clarity. You have already heard the advice, but it has not yet helped you understand the work itself. What matters here is not gathering more opinions but moving beyond a closed loop of thought.

You could discuss with an experienced colleague what is missing in your current role and what changes might be possible there. Such a conversation can help clarify the options without asking the other person to decide for you.

Yes / No

The Hermit — Upright

Why this answer

Yes. The Hermit favors a thoughtful decision: a positive answer rests on careful consideration of the question and your own understanding of the situation.

A clarification

Give the question time and consider it carefully before acting. A “yes” is not a reason to rush.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

What do I need to think through before saying yes?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.

The Hermit — Reversed

Why this answer

No. The answer reflects a lack of clarity: isolation and too much inward focus may make the question harder to understand.

A clarification

The question needs more time for careful reflection.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

What remains unclear despite all my reflection?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.
