The High Priestess

Descriptions and symbolism are based on the card’s classic illustration in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. Details of the artwork may differ in other editions of the deck.

This guide brings together traditional and modern readings. Interpretations and answers may differ between authors and schools.

Go to meanings
The High Priestess

The High Priestess greets us with silence. Between the black and white pillars, she sits before a closed veil, holding a scroll with quiet composure. Her stillness has the patience of someone who does not need to fill every pause with words. It is as though the question is being given time to be heard in full.

Waite associated the Priestess with the Shekinah, the divine presence that discloses the inner meaning of sacred law. In this reading, she guards knowledge that cannot be fully conveyed by reading it aloud. The letters TORA are visible on the scroll, but part of it is covered by her clothing: what is written exists alongside what remains implied. The veil behind her preserves that same boundary between the revealed and the hidden.

Core meaning

The High Priestess is associated with intuition, hidden knowledge, and the ability to let an answer come in its own time. Reversed, she may point to distrust of your own perceptions, things left unsaid, or a superficial understanding.

Image and symbols

Card image

The card shows a seated woman in light-colored and blue robes. She sits between a black pillar marked B on the viewer’s left and a white pillar marked J on the right.

Behind her hangs a patterned veil adorned with pomegranates and palm leaves.

She wears a headdress with a central disk and two curved ends, and a cross rests on her chest. A scroll marked TORA, partly concealed, lies across her lap; a yellow crescent moon rests at her feet.

Traditional context

For Arthur Edward Waite, the High Priestess guards the hidden meaning of knowledge. The TORA scroll signifies a higher, secret law, and the part concealed by her robe suggests a difference between what is spoken and what is implied. Waite connects her with reflected moonlight, the image of the Shekinah, and the inner aspect of spiritual tradition.

In his separate list of divinatory meanings, Waite names mystery, silence, tenacity, wisdom, and science, as well as a future not yet revealed. For the reversed card, he lists passion, ardor, conceit, and superficial knowledge. This is a historical list, not a description of every interpretation used today.

In contemporary Rider–Waite–Smith guides, the upright High Priestess more often represents careful observation, intuition, and a deliberate pause. The reversed card is read in different ways: as lost trust in oneself, excessive reserve, missing information, or avoidance of a difficult conversation. These readings are worth distinguishing: solitude can help us understand, while silence sometimes only prolongs uncertainty.

This context applies to both upright and reversed positions.

A seated woman between two pillars

The still figure represents a keeper of knowledge that calls for observation and attention rather than force.

Pillars marked B and J

Boaz and Jachin refer to the two pillars of Solomon’s Temple. The Priestess seated between them represents an acceptance of opposites and a search for balance.

The veil behind the Priestess

It separates the visible from the hidden: not everything about a situation becomes clear at once.

Pomegranates on the veil

In modern interpretations, pomegranates are associated with fertility and the myth of Persephone. They evoke life and the mysteries beyond the veil.

Palm leaves in the veil’s pattern

In modern interpretations, the palms can represent victory and renewal.

The TORA scroll, partly covered by her robe

For Waite, it represents a higher, secret law: part of its meaning can be read, while the rest remains unspoken.

A headdress with a round disk between two curved forms

Waite describes a horned diadem with a globe at its center. Later interpretations often connect it with the three lunar phases and the rhythms of change.

An equal-armed cross on her chest

Waite calls it a solar cross. In modern interpretations, it represents the meeting of material and spiritual dimensions.

A crescent moon at the Priestess’s feet

It emphasizes the card’s lunar associations, intuitive perception, and cycles.

Colors

  • Blue: the Priestess’s robe

The color of her clothing is associated with the depth of inner perception and the card’s imagery of water.

  • Black: pillar B on the left

The dark half of the pair emphasizes one of the opposing sides between which the figure sits.

  • White: pillar J on the right

The light half complements the black pillar. Here, white represents the pole of light in contrast with darkness.

  • The pale blue background between the pillars

In modern interpretations, the pale blue background is associated with hidden, protected knowledge.

Meanings

The High Priestess — Upright

General

Overall meaning

There may still be something unclear about the situation, so the High Priestess invites you not to rush to a conclusion. Traditionally, she is associated with mystery, silence, and wisdom; contemporary readings also emphasize observation, awareness of your feelings, and the ability to sit with a pause.

Possible support

Noticing subtle changes and listening to your own impressions may help when there is no obvious answer yet.

Possible difficulty

A pause stops being helpful when it becomes a way to avoid a conversation or decision indefinitely.

Focus

Consider what you already know and what remains outside the conversation or beyond your observations.

Reflection questions
  • What remains unresolved in this situation?
  • Where would it help to observe first rather than respond immediately?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In romantic relationships, the High Priestess points to a quiet closeness that has not yet been fully expressed. Feelings and trust may become clearer over time. In a friendship, she can also suggest that not everything needs to be pressed for an answer in the moment.

Possible support

Patience, attention to your feelings, and gentle honesty help deepen closeness.

Possible difficulty

In romance, a feeling of deep connection does not by itself mean the other person is ready to act openly. A prolonged silence may continue.

Focus

Notice what has been said outright and what is still only an impression. Do not assign a specific meaning to another person’s silence.

Reflection questions
  • What would I like to discuss calmly with someone close to me?
  • What should I ask directly instead of waiting for hints to provide the answer?

Work and study

Overall meaning

At work or in your studies, the High Priestess may signal a time for learning, research, and observation. In a creative project, an idea may still be taking shape; in professional growth, a mentor could play an important role.

Possible support

Studying the subject, useful feedback from a mentor, and noticing nuances before making a decision can help you move forward.

Possible difficulty

Making a decision public or speaking up too soon can get in the way when the unwritten rules and facts are still unclear.

Focus

Consider what you need to learn about the task or team before choosing your next step.

Reflection questions
  • What do I still need to know about the task ahead?
  • Who could I ask about what I need to learn right now?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

In money matters, the High Priestess is associated with discretion and privacy. The terms of an offer may require careful reading, and you do not have to discuss your personal finances with others.

Possible support

Noticing the fine print in an agreement and keeping financial details private when there is no reason to share them can help you make a clear choice.

Possible difficulty

A deal, decision, or commitment may be premature before important terms are clarified.

Focus

Check the documents and your expense records. Is there a term you still do not understand?

Reflection questions
  • Which part of the purchase terms or agreement is still unclear to me?
  • Who really needs to know about my finances?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

In matters of everyday well-being, the card draws attention to your inner rhythm, emotional responses, and need for quiet time to yourself. Here it concerns awareness of your state, not the identification of illness.

Possible support

Writing about your experiences at an unhurried pace or resting alone may help you better understand your mood.

Possible difficulty

Feelings that are still hard to understand or express can make it difficult to make sense of your state.

Focus

Notice how your mood and sense of well-being shift after a busy day, and what helps you regain a sense of calm.

Reflection questions
  • When is it easiest for me to gather my thoughts in peace?
  • Which activities usually leave me needing rest?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

The High Priestess links inner change with self-observation. Before revisiting an important decision, take time to distinguish your own response, a familiar belief, and the influence of others’ opinions.

Possible support

Journaling, contemplation, or creative activity can help you notice thoughts that get crowded out by everyday demands.

Possible difficulty

Looking inward can become an endless postponement of a real choice if observation no longer brings fresh clarity.

Focus

Notice which beliefs keep resurfacing and how you personally relate to them.

Reflection questions
  • Which opinion do I repeat out of habit without questioning it?
  • What do I notice about myself when I am free from other people’s advice?

The High Priestess — Reversed

General

Overall meaning

The reversed High Priestess often highlights a disconnect between feeling and action: others’ opinions drown out intuition, while uncertainty leads to hasty interpretations of events. Another aspect involves silence and superficial knowledge. Waite specifically mentioned conceit and passion; contemporary guides more often emphasize doubt and secrecy.

Possible support

Returning to your own observations and calmly clarifying what was left unsaid can help you move beyond guesswork.

Possible difficulty

Self-doubt, vague hints, or a habit of withholding important details can prolong confusion.

Focus

Compare your impressions with what you can observe. Where do words, information, and actions fail to form a clear picture?

Reflection questions
  • What important point am I choosing not to clarify yet?
  • What am I relying on when I doubt my own impression?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In romantic relationships, the reversed High Priestess may represent hidden feelings, a lack of openness, or trying to please someone at the expense of your own feelings. In friendship, she can also point to a misunderstanding prolonged by things left unsaid.

Possible support

Calmly discussing what remains unresolved offers a chance to ease tension without assuming the other person has hidden motives.

Possible difficulty

Withholding thoughts and avoiding conversation can obstruct mutual understanding, even when both people want to preserve the connection.

Focus

Notice whether you agree to words or actions simply to avoid an uncomfortable conversation.

Reflection questions
  • What is hard for me to talk about directly?
  • Do I sometimes agree out of politeness even when I think differently?

Work and study

Overall meaning

At work, the reversed High Priestess is associated with missing information, unclear rules, and a sense of being disconnected from the team. A decision may look straightforward on paper, even though important expectations have not been discussed.

Possible support

Asking about the actual requirements of a role or project can clarify what is still an informal understanding.

Possible difficulty

Missing information and ignoring troubling details can lead you to misread a work situation.

Focus

Pay attention to unspoken expectations and responsibilities that have not been agreed on, not just the official task description.

Reflection questions
  • Which responsibility at work has not been discussed clearly enough?
  • What do I want to ask my colleagues before I agree?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

In financial matters, the reversed High Priestess cautions against relying on incomplete information. This is especially relevant to offers involving contracts, credit, or long-term commitments: a first impression is not enough to assess them.

Possible support

Reviewing the terms with someone you trust and filling in missing information can help you make a considered decision.

Possible difficulty

A missed contract clause or insufficient scrutiny of promises can distort your understanding of what a decision will cost.

Focus

Check the amounts, payment schedule, and terms that have only been explained in general language.

Reflection questions
  • Which part of the agreement do I not yet fully understand?
  • Do I have all the information about the expenses ahead?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

In matters of emotional well-being, the reversed High Priestess draws attention to suppressed feelings, inner confusion, and a sense that your own needs have taken a back seat.

Possible support

Quiet time for reflection and supportive conversation may help you put words to feelings that have gone unnoticed.

Possible difficulty

Constantly looking to others for validation or ignoring your own feelings may deepen a sense of disconnection from yourself.

Focus

Notice whether your daily routine leaves room for rest, and whether you recognize when the demands on you become too much.

Reflection questions
  • Which feelings do I most often overlook?
  • What in my schedule makes it hard to rest peacefully?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

In personal growth, the card relates to doubting your own assessment of events. Outside advice may drown out personal convictions, while familiar ways of explaining the situation to yourself no longer bring clarity.

Possible support

Writing down your thoughts and returning to what you actually felt and what actually happened can make it easier to distinguish your perspective from others’ expectations.

Possible difficulty

Trying to win everyone’s approval can make it hard to see which choices align with your own views.

Focus

Notice when you change your mind under social pressure and when you have genuinely received new information.

Reflection questions
  • Whose opinion do I accept as my own without examining it?
  • Which of my reactions would be worth writing about to understand it better?

Roles in a spread

Position examples

A position gives the card a question, such as what helps or what gets in the way. That question shapes how you read its meaning.

The High Priestess — Upright

Situation

The full picture has yet to emerge. Observation and an understanding of the hidden context matter more right now than a quick answer.

Influence

Something beyond the available explanations may be influencing the situation. There is no need to assume someone has a hidden agenda.

Motivation

The motivation may be a desire to look deeper, understand your own choices, and see what is still hidden. Rather than rushing into action, you may feel drawn to observe, spend time with your thoughts, or learn more.

Support

Careful attention to your inner observations can be a source of support: noticing what often gets lost amid other people’s opinions.

Obstacle

An obstacle may be looking to others for every answer while overlooking your own observations.

Focus of attention

Notice the boundary between facts you have heard and your own impressions. You can check the former; the latter deserve quiet reflection.

Next step

Before announcing a decision, make time to observe. Write down what remains unclear and notice how you feel after some quiet reflection.

Possible development

If circumstances stay the same, clarity is more likely to arrive gradually. Your understanding of the question may shift before anything noticeable happens.

The High Priestess — Reversed

Situation

The situation feels contradictory: you may be suppressing your own doubts while important facts or feelings remain unspoken.

Influence

Other people’s expectations, rumors, or omissions may be influencing the situation. That is a reason to check the facts, not to assume deception.

Motivation

An action may stem from a wish to avoid an uncomfortable thought or seek approval from others before your own wishes are clear. The card invites you to consider what drives you to avoid the question or hand the choice to someone else.

Support

A quiet pause away from other people’s noise can help restore clarity, as can a calm conversation when things left unsaid are getting in the way.

Obstacle

The obstacle may be ignoring a feeling or using silence to close off an uncomfortable subject, making the situation harder to understand.

Focus of attention

Ask whether uncertainty is leading you to accept a convenient explanation rather than clarify an important detail.

Next step

Name exactly what troubles you or remains unresolved. Write down your observations and return to the unspoken issue in conversation instead of continuing to speculate.

Possible development

If things remain unspoken, clarity may be delayed. Confusion or mixed signals may keep returning until someone puts them into words.

Combination examples

Card combinations are in development. For now, here are a few examples.

The High Priestess + The Magician

The High Priestess ( upright) + The Magician ( upright)

Example question:
How can I bring intention together with thoughtful action?
Example interpretation:

In a practical reading, this pair is associated with aligning intention and action: first understanding when it is time to act, then using the skills available to you.

The High Priestess + The Moon

The High Priestess ( upright) + The Moon ( upright)

Example question:
What is known here, and what might be speculation?
Example interpretation:

Two images of the hidden deepen the uncertainty. A feeling may offer a useful clue, but fear and speculation can distort how you interpret it.

The High Priestess + The Hermit

The High Priestess ( upright) + The Hermit ( upright)

Example question:
What does a prolonged pause mean?
Example interpretation:

This combination heightens the themes of solitude and inner reflection. Little may change outwardly while someone tries to better understand what is happening.

The High Priestess + The Lovers

The High Priestess ( upright) + The Lovers ( upright)

Example question:
What has remained unspoken in a close relationship?
Example interpretation:

A meaningful connection or choice comes to the foreground, with feelings not yet fully expressed. The distinction between inner attachment and an openly shared understanding matters.

The High Priestess + The Devil

The High Priestess ( upright) + The Devil ( upright)

Example question:
What attachment is making it harder to see the situation clearly?
Example interpretation:

The pair may highlight a hidden attachment, an intense desire, or difficulty recognizing an unhealthy recurring pattern. By itself, it does not confirm that anyone is being deceptive.

Reading example

An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.

The High Priestess — Upright

  1. Situation:

After a long break in contact, someone close to you suggests reconnecting. The conversation is friendly, but you still have not discussed what caused the earlier disagreement. You want to respond, even though the uncertainty remains.

  2. Question:

What should I notice before a new conversation?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What matters to notice» and getting The High Priestess (upright).

  4. Interpretation:

The upright High Priestess calls for attention to what has yet to come to light. The warm tone of the conversation matters, but so does what has been left unsaid. You do not have to decide everything on a first impression. You can first identify the question that remains unanswered, then bring it up calmly the next time you talk.

The High Priestess — Reversed

  1. Situation:

After a long break in contact, someone close to you suggests reconnecting. The conversation is friendly, but you still have not discussed what caused the earlier disagreement. You want to respond, even though the uncertainty remains.

  2. Question:

What should I notice before a new conversation?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What matters to notice» and getting The High Priestess (reversed).

  4. Interpretation:

The reversed High Priestess shows how silence can keep confusion alive. After a warm conversation, it is easy to decide that the original disagreement no longer matters, even though it has never been named. Here you can notice whether you are accepting the old silence for the sake of a quick reconciliation, and find the words to ask for honest clarification.

Yes / No

The High Priestess — Upright

Why this answer

The upright High Priestess gives an answer that depends on the question. When you ask about your own feelings, she allows for a cautious “Yes”: listen to what you are already noticing. If you are asking about an external event or outcome, the answer is not yet clear; important information may be missing.

A clarification

If your question concerns an event or action, find out what circumstances are missing before deciding. If it concerns your feelings, pay attention to your own response. This can help you see which part of the answer applies to your situation.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

  • What am I already noticing about my feelings?
  • What information do I still need to make a decision?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.

The High Priestess — Reversed

Why this answer

The reversed High Priestess leans toward “No.” Mixed signals, omissions, or incomplete information make it difficult to agree with confidence or move forward.

A clarification

Before deciding, clarify any undisclosed terms and return to the question that gives you pause. The answer suggests working through the uncertainties that make agreement seem premature right now.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

  • What important detail do I still need to clarify?
  • Is there a doubt I keep putting aside?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.
