The Empress

The Empress sits among her cushions with the easy comfort of someone at home in a familiar place. Yet her seat stands beneath the open sky, beside a forest and flowing water, with stalks of grain reaching almost to her feet. She holds her scepter while life around her continues at its own pace.

Waite associated her with an earthly paradise and a form of motherhood that encompasses more than any one human life. In this image, the earth itself gives birth and provides nourishment. Its fruits need time: water flows among the trees, grain ripens, and the woman's regal presence does not disturb this natural order.

She, too, enjoys the generosity of her realm. The cushions support her, and her loose dress falls in broad folds. Care extends to the one who embodies it. Among the stalks at her feet, grain is ripening into food that can eventually be shared with others.

Core meaning

The Empress connects care with growth, creativity, and abundance. She draws attention to beauty, physical pleasure, and the ability not only to care for others but also to receive care.

Image and symbols

Card image

A woman sits on soft cushions among the trees. Her pale dress is patterned with red pomegranates. A leafy wreath and a crown of stars adorn her head, while pale beads and a golden collar frame her neck.

In her right hand, on the viewer's left, she raises a scepter topped with an orb; her left hand rests on her thigh. Beside her seat stands a heart-shaped shield bearing the symbol of Venus.

Stalks of grain grow in the foreground, while a stream and small waterfall appear to the right, behind the figure. A yellow background rises above the greenery.

Traditional context

For Waite, the Empress embodies earthly life and universal fertility. Her garden belongs to the visible world, and the passage into life is described as a gate into the garden of Venus. The maternal image here extends beyond literal motherhood.

Waite's list of divinatory meanings is varied. Upright, alongside fertility, action, and initiative, he includes longevity, the unknown, hidden things, difficulty, doubt, and ignorance. Reversed, he lists light, truth, the unraveling of complicated matters, and public rejoicing; a separate alternative meaning is vacillation.

Modern interpretations more often associate the card with care, sensual pleasure, and creating something new. The reversed orientation is described through imbalances in care and creative difficulties. These meanings do not replace Waite's original list.

The correspondences of the Golden Dawn are presented separately. In particular, the modern explanation of the number three as the union of two principles should not be attributed to Waite, who rejected identifying this card with the Triad.

This context applies to both upright and reversed positions.

A seated woman in rich robes

A maternal image of creating and sustaining life. It encompasses care and creativity, not just childbirth.

A crown of twelve stars

In modern interpretations, the stars are associated with the zodiac and the natural cycles that govern growth.

A leafy wreath beneath the starry crown

The wreath is associated with nature and Venus and is sometimes identified as myrtle. Another modern interpretation sees laurel and a theme of protection. The illustration does not allow the plant species to be identified with certainty.

A scepter topped with an orb in her raised right hand

The scepter represents authority. Waite explicitly identifies the orb as the earthly world, connecting the Empress's authority with embodied life.

A heart-shaped shield beside her seat

The heart-shaped shield brings love and protection together: care creates a sense of safety.

The symbol of Venus on the shield and cushion pattern

Venus connects the image with love, beauty, and sensual pleasure.

Pomegranates patterned across her dress

With its many seeds, the pomegranate becomes a symbol of fertility and creative potential.

Ripe stalks of grain before the figure

The grain connects fertility with nourishment and the tangible results of growth.

Dense green trees behind her seat

The lush vegetation emphasizes a fertile environment in which life is nurtured and allowed to flourish.

A stream and small waterfall to the right

Flowing water is read as a symbol of life's continuity and change; another modern interpretation associates it with emotions.

A cushioned seat with several pillows

Material comfort and enjoyment of the physical side of life.

Pale beads around her neck

In modern interpretations, the pale beads can be seen as pearls and associated with Venus, her birth from the sea, beauty, and love.

An ornate golden collar beneath the beads

The decorative collar can be read as a sign of abundance.

Colors

  • White: the main color of her dress

In symbolic interpretations of the RWS deck, white is associated with purity.

  • Red: the upholstery and cushions

Red emphasizes passion and the sensual side of love.

  • Yellow: the background above the trees

In modern interpretations, the yellow background can emphasize creativity and vitality.

Meanings

The Empress — Upright

General

Overall meaning

The Empress describes a fertile period: an idea takes shape, while something already begun needs care and a supportive environment. Creation, material abundance, and enjoyment of life are central themes.

This is not simply a matter of waiting for natural growth. Waite also includes action and initiative, alongside the unknown and doubt: fertility does not rule out uncertain circumstances.

Possible support

An environment where you can receive care, discuss ideas, and learn from supportive people can help.

Possible difficulty

A lack of attention to something important can bring growth to a halt. When the Empress appears in an obstacle position, she highlights precisely this missing care.

Focus

Notice what currently needs your time and involvement so that an idea does not remain merely a wish.

Reflection questions
  • Which of the things I've started do I want to develop further?
  • Who could I accept help from?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In a romantic reading, the card is associated with tenderness, sensual attraction, lasting intimacy, and the desire to care for a partner. Family and maternal care are also among its meanings.

In friendships and family relationships, modern interpretations emphasize mutual support that allows closeness without sacrificing independence.

Possible support

A relationship grows stronger through attentiveness and a willingness not only to give care but also to receive it.

Possible difficulty

Even a warm relationship can become restrictive if support turns into dependency or consumes personal interests.

Focus

It is worth maintaining personal boundaries in close relationships so that support does not come at the expense of each person's right to their own life.

Reflection questions
  • How do I usually show my loved ones that I care?
  • Is it easy for me to accept help from people close to me?

Work and study

Overall meaning

At work, the Empress represents a creative approach and the gradual development of a project. Supportive colleagues and a positive working environment help bring ideas to life. There is room to build skills and learn from more experienced people.

Possible support

Support comes from leadership that develops people's abilities and encourages initiative rather than demanding results alone.

Possible difficulty

Growth may be hindered by established ways of working that leave no room for new ideas.

Focus

Pay attention to your working conditions: do they offer enough support and room for creativity?

Reflection questions
  • What idea would I like to develop at work?
  • Which of my colleagues could I learn something from?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

In financial matters, the card is associated with material comfort and the ability to share what you have. Modern practical interpretations also highlight developing your own ideas as a potential source of income.

Possible support

A thoughtful, patient approach to money and the gradual development of what you have started provides a foundation.

Possible difficulty

A familiar approach to earning money may no longer offer room for growth. Here, the difficulty is associated with a lack of new ideas.

Focus

When evaluating earning potential, it helps to consider not only immediate profit but also whether an undertaking can sustain material comfort over time.

Reflection questions
  • What currently gives me a sense of material comfort?
  • How do I manage what I have to share?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

Here, the Empress is associated with rest, adequate nourishment, physical comfort, and emotional support. Self-care takes shape in everyday living conditions and in the ability to recognize your own needs.

Possible support

Pleasant physical experiences, creative activities, and time in nature can help you reconnect with yourself.

Possible difficulty

Constantly caring for others without attending to your own well-being can leave fatigue unnoticed.

Focus

Consider whether your everyday life allows enough room for rest, meals, and receiving support.

Reflection questions
  • What helps me relax and enjoy my rest?
  • Do I have time in my day to eat without rushing?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

The Empress connects personal growth with free creative expression, awareness of physical sensations, and the ability to experience pleasure. These qualities are not tied to gender: sensitivity and creativity are available to everyone.

Possible support

An activity that makes self-expression easier can provide support: creative work, exploring your feelings, or paying attention to what brings you joy.

Possible difficulty

Support begins to hinder growth when it becomes difficult to make decisions independently without it.

Focus

Notice which desires and feelings find expression in your life and which go unattended.

Reflection questions
  • In what activity do I feel most free to express myself?
  • What do I enjoy doing simply for the pleasure of it?

The Empress — Reversed

General

Overall meaning

In modern interpretations, care may be excessive or insufficient: overprotection restricts independence, other people's needs displace your own, or support disappears entirely. Another aspect involves creative stagnation and delayed growth.

Waite also offers a clarifying interpretation: the discovery of truth and the unraveling of something complicated. His alternative meaning, vacillation, should be read separately rather than combined with clarity into a single interpretation.

Possible support

In modern interpretations, returning attention to your own needs can help. The clarifying interpretation offers another source of support: taking a clear-eyed look at a complicated issue.

Possible difficulty

Unexpressed creative desires and neglected personal needs can perpetuate stagnation.

Focus

Consider the balance between how much care you give and how much you receive. Your own needs should not disappear from the picture.

Reflection questions
  • Is there something important I'm not giving enough attention to right now?
  • Do I still have the freedom to make my own decisions?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In romantic relationships, care can give way to control, dependency, or emotional distance. Sometimes a person struggles to express warmth or feel valued alongside their partner.

In family interpretations, themes include overprotective parenting and difficulties in the relationship with one's mother. Friendships and family relationships can also involve one-sided support, where care is not reciprocated.

Possible support

Trusting another person's independence can help. In a partnership, this means moving from overprotection toward a relationship between two adults.

Possible difficulty

In a partnership, care becomes a source of difficulty when intrusive attention undermines independence or involvement turns into control.

Focus

Notice whether you can openly discuss what help is needed and what each person expects in return.

Reflection questions
  • Is there help I find difficult to ask for?
  • Do I allow someone close to me the right to decline my care?

Work and study

Overall meaning

Creative work is struggling to move forward, everyday tasks feel repetitive, and professional growth seems limited. You may feel that your contributions have gone unrecognized. When starting a new job, difficulty adjusting can be another important theme.

Possible support

A mentor, additional training, and opportunities to discuss difficulties can help instead of trying to manage everything alone.

Possible difficulty

A workplace that offers little support or opportunity for development can further discourage initiative.

Focus

It helps to distinguish what needs to change: working conditions, recognition of your contributions, or confidence in your own skills.

Reflection questions
  • What would I like to learn but haven't been able to make time for?
  • What kind of support am I missing at work?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

The card can describe stagnation in financial matters or a lack of attention to them. Another possibility is that a sense of scarcity persists even when finances are stable. Anxiety about having enough does not necessarily mean there is an actual shortage of money.

Possible support

Returning to expense planning and long-term goals without making hasty decisions can help.

Possible difficulty

Inertia and neglect of financial matters can leave important material needs unmet.

Focus

If you are considering a new venture, check whether planning and the allocation of funds have received enough attention.

Reflection questions
  • What financial matters have I been putting off?
  • What exactly is making me feel that I don't have enough?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

Modern interpretations draw attention to giving until you are depleted, not getting enough rest, and finding it difficult to care for yourself. The imbalance can also take another form: pleasure becomes excessive while practical needs fall into the background.

Possible support

Rest and the freedom to reduce your involvement in other people's affairs can help when your own energy is running low.

Possible difficulty

Skipping breaks and pushing through fatigue can sustain a state of overload.

Focus

Look for everyday signs that your needs are going unmet: skipped meals, insufficient sleep, and rest that keeps getting postponed.

Reflection questions
  • What kind of self-care do I keep putting off?
  • Can I reduce my workload right now?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

The reversed Empress can describe self-worth that depends on other people's approval or outward prosperity. Creative desires retreat in the face of judgment, while attention to the body can turn into constant criticism of one's appearance.

Possible support

You can give creativity personal meaning again by making something for your own enjoyment, without necessarily showing the result to anyone else.

Possible difficulty

When self-worth is measured mainly through approval and possessions, it becomes harder to recognize your own desires.

Focus

Notice whether you measure your worth solely by how useful you are to others or how much you accomplish.

Reflection questions
  • What would I like to try but hesitate to because I'm afraid of being judged?
  • What do I enjoy creating when no one is watching?

Roles in a spread

Position examples

A position gives the card a question, such as what helps or what gets in the way. That question shapes how you read its meaning.

The Empress — Upright

Situation

The conditions for growth are in place: something has the potential to develop, and there is an opportunity to support it. Creation, rather than just the finished result, lies at the heart of the situation.

Influence

A nurturing influence enters the situation: support from loved ones, a creative mentor, or an environment where expressing your abilities comes more easily.

Motivation

You may be motivated by the desire to create something valuable, watch it grow, and live in an environment where care is mutual.

Support

A supportive environment makes it easier to receive help, explore creative ideas, and develop what you have begun.

Obstacle

In one modern position-based interpretation, the card points to a lack of care: something important is not receiving the attention it needs to develop.

Focus of attention

The quality of care itself deserves attention: is what you are developing receiving enough involvement, time, and room for creativity?

Next step

Give your plans practical care: devote attention to them and create the conditions they need to grow.

Possible development

If conditions remain supportive, what has been started can continue to develop and bear more tangible fruit.

The Empress — Reversed

Situation

Growth has stalled: care is unevenly distributed, independence is lacking, or creative work is going unsupported.

Influence

Your environment may fail to provide the support you need or become overly intrusive. Either can make independent growth more difficult.

Motivation

You may be motivated by a desire to move beyond stagnation, regain independence, and give more attention to your own life.

Support

Support comes from recognizing your right to care for yourself and give less when giving has become exhausting.

Obstacle

Growth is held back by a lack of self-care and suppressed creative desires. In this interpretation, the obstacle lies in what is not being allowed to grow.

Focus of attention

Notice where involvement in other people's affairs has become an obligation without limits, and which of your own needs are being put aside as a result.

Next step

Pull back from giving too much and establish limits on your involvement so that your own needs have room again.

Possible development

If your own needs and creative interests continue to go unattended, stagnation may persist.

Combination examples

Card combinations are in development. For now, here are a few examples.

The Empress + The Lovers

The Empress ( upright) + The Lovers ( upright)

Example question:
How does sensual intimacy find expression in this relationship?
Example interpretation:

The Lovers emphasize the sensual side of the Empress: the pleasure of intimacy and physical attraction.

The Empress + The Star

The Empress ( upright) + The Star ( upright)

Example question:
What sustains the openness in this relationship?
Example interpretation:

The Star enhances the Empress's generosity and free expression of love. At the heart of this pairing is the ability to share warmth.

The Empress + Ten of Pentacles

The Empress ( upright) + Ten of Pentacles ( upright)

Example question:
How does material comfort appear here?
Example interpretation:

The Ten of Pentacles emphasizes the material side of the Empress: abundance, comfort, and the enjoyment of a well-established home life.

Reading example

An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.

The Empress — Upright

  1. Situation:

You used to enjoy drawing, and now you want to return to it. But getting started feels difficult: you think the result needs to be good right away, or the time will have been wasted.

  2. Question:

How can I return to this activity?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help Me Return» and getting The Empress (upright).

  4. Interpretation:

The Empress connects creativity with pleasure and care for what is growing. In this situation, she offers a way to shift your attention from judging the finished work to enjoying the activity itself.

You could choose something you particularly enjoyed doing and make room for that interest in your life. What matters here is your interest in the process, not proving your skill.

The Empress — Reversed

  1. Situation:

You used to enjoy drawing, and now you want to return to it. But getting started feels difficult: you think the result needs to be good right away, or the time will have been wasted.

  2. Question:

How can I return to this activity?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help Me Return» and getting The Empress (reversed).

  4. Interpretation:

Here, the reversed Empress highlights how fear of judgment can stifle creativity. The expectation of a good result may hold you back before you even begin.

One approach is to make something just for yourself, without showing it or comparing it with anyone else's work. This gives the activity room to be a personal pleasure rather than a test of your abilities.

Yes / No

The Empress — Upright

Why this answer

Yes. In this practical approach, the Empress is associated with growth, creation, and favorable conditions. This answer is particularly relevant to questions about developing relationships, ideas, and projects already underway.

A clarification

This “yes” allows time for growth. If the question concerns an immediate result, the card does not suggest speed: its emphasis is on maturation rather than quick completion.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

Can I give this enough time to develop?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.

The Empress — Reversed

Why this answer

Probably not. In this interpretation, growth is facing obstacles: an idea lacks care, creative freedom, or consistent support. The answer is closer to “not coming together yet” than to a definitive rejection.

A clarification

The question is what stands in the way of growth: insufficient self-care, creative inhibition, or boundaries that are not being respected. These obstacles deserve attention before pursuing a new goal.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

What is currently keeping me from giving this the attention it needs?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.
