The Star
Descriptions and symbolism are based on the card’s classic illustration in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. Details of the artwork may differ in other editions of the deck.
This guide brings together traditional and modern readings. Interpretations and answers may differ between authors and schools.
The woman pours water freely, as though she has no need to save the last few drops. Waite called it the water of life and connected the scene with gifts of the spirit. This gift does not stay in the jugs: one stream flows into the pool, while the other reaches the earth.
Nothing separates the nude figure from the world around her. Her quiet action conveys trust in life's continuation: she does not gather the water back or demand that the watered earth bear fruit at once. A great star shines above her, but the woman's gaze is directed downward, toward the flowing water. Small streams wind among the plants, ripples spread across the pool, and her simple gesture continues beyond the reach of her outstretched arms.

Image and symbols
Card image
A nude, fair-haired woman is shown beside a pool of water. Her left knee rests on the ground, while her right foot touches the surface of the water. Her head is bowed and turned toward the viewer's left.
She pours water from the jug in her right hand into the pool and from the jug in her left hand onto the ground. The water branches into small streams across the earth, while ripples spread across the pool.
A large yellow eight-pointed star and seven smaller white stars appear in the blue sky. Green ground and small plants surround the woman. Low hills stretch into the distance, and a bird perches in a small tree on the viewer's right.
Traditional context
In Waite's symbolic explanation, The Star is associated with the Waters of Life and gifts of the spirit. The nude figure represents truth unveiled and eternal beauty. Waite also connects her with the Great Mother and Binah, the Kabbalistic Understanding. He considers the single word “hope” too superficial an explanation of this image.
His list of divinatory meanings is different. For the upright card, he lists loss, theft, deprivation, and abandonment, then offers hope and favorable prospects as another interpretation. For The Star reversed, he gives arrogance, haughtiness, and powerlessness. These meanings should not be silently replaced with a modern set.
In modern RWS-based practice, the focus is generally on renewed hope, emotional recovery, inspiration, and openness. Coming after The Tower, the image is read as an opportunity to regain your footing after upheaval. In Sergey Savchenko's approach, the emphasis falls more on pleasant company, dreams, and how far those dreams may be removed from everyday reality. These are differences in emphasis, not one mandatory meaning shared by every school.
Nude woman
For Waite, she represents truth unveiled, eternal youth, and beauty. In a modern reading, her nudity also expresses openness and vulnerability.
Left knee on the ground, right foot on the water
The pose brings practical grounding together with intuitive perception. Here, earth and water represent different ways of finding one's bearings in life.
Two jugs pouring water onto the ground and into a pool
Waite calls the flowing water the Waters of Life. The twofold pouring expresses the free sharing of what nourishes the living world.
Large eight-pointed star
Waite compares it to the Blazing Star of Masonic symbolism. Paul Foster Case identifies it with Sirius, the star of Isis-Sothis. These are two esoteric readings of the same celestial image. In a modern reading, it also serves as a guiding light that helps you maintain your direction.
Seven smaller eight-pointed stars
In Case's interpretation, they correspond to the seven celestial bodies of classical astrology and their associated seven alchemical metals.
Pool of water and the stream flowing back into it
Case associates the water flowing directly back into the pool with intuition: understanding arrives immediately, before it can be put into words.
Five streams of water across the ground
Case reads them as the five senses. Unlike the stream flowing directly into the pool, knowledge here comes through sensory experience.
Small plants near the shore
Case connects these plants with the ten sephiroth that make up the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. In his reading, they are another reference to the structure of the world as a whole.
Bird in a small tree on the right
In esoteric interpretations, the bird is associated with the ibis of Thoth and the themes of thought and knowledge. This is a symbolic association, not a precise identification of the species depicted.
Bent legs and outstretched arms
Case sees the outline of the pose as a cross with bent arms, known as a fylfot. In his esoteric system, this symbol expresses the wholeness of creation.
Small tree where the bird is perched
The tree can be read as a connection between earth and sky: it grows from the ground and reaches upward.
Distant mountains
In a modern reading, the distant mountains may suggest challenges still to come. They remain in the background while the figure is occupied with pouring water.
Colors
- Green: the earth and vegetation around the woman
The greenery emphasizes fertility and life's continuation: the earth receives water and remains able to nourish plants.
Meanings
The Star — Upright
General
Overall meaning
The Star describes a return of hope and interest in the future. After a difficult time, it becomes possible to dream again, find inspiration, and feel a greater sense of inner calm.
The card also has a generous side: a desire to open up, share what has sustained you, and not keep everything good to yourself.
Possible support
Your own resilience and the ability to recognize support already around you can become sources of strength. They ground hope in lived experience.
Possible difficulty
Inspiration is not a ready-made solution. Hope alone is not enough when a plan needs action to become real.
Focus
Notice the connection between dreams and actions: what practical steps would help you pursue your chosen goal?
Reflection questions
- What am I hoping for, even if I cannot yet see the whole solution?
- What experiences help me maintain my confidence?
Relationships
Overall meaning
In romantic relationships, The Star is associated with renewed trust and hope for closeness. After a breakup, it can describe rebuilding confidence in yourself; within a couple, a difficult period may give way to an opportunity to reconnect.
In friendships and family relationships, the card can suggest greater understanding, kindness, and acceptance where there were once disagreements.
Possible support
In a relationship, honesty and a willingness on both sides to keep talking can help restore closeness, even while trust is still being rebuilt.
Possible difficulty
Past hurt can make it difficult to trust again: you want closeness, but taking the risk of opening up feels hard.
Focus
In a romantic relationship, it is worth distinguishing surface imperfections from the real source of difficulty. Both people's willingness to address that issue matters more than maintaining a picture-perfect relationship.
Reflection questions
- Where do I want to rebuild trust?
- What helps me speak openly with my partner?
Work and study
Overall meaning
In work, The Star is associated with hope for professional growth, creative inspiration, and renewed interest in what you do. It can describe searching for a new job, seeking recognition for your abilities, or recovering after a demanding period at work.
The emphasis here is on work that feels personally meaningful and leaves room for your own contribution.
Possible support
Belief in your professional aspirations helps you stay open to opportunities.
Possible difficulty
Trying to shape creative work around other people's expectations can draw it away from your original vision.
Focus
Notice what kind of work genuinely engages you and where there is room for independent thought, rather than simply completing familiar tasks.
Reflection question
What part of my work renews my interest in the future?
Money and resources
Overall meaning
In money matters, The Star can describe a gradual return to stability after a period of worry. It can also highlight a financial goal that helps you sustain hope and keep making an effort.
Possible support
Recognizing what you already have may encourage you to keep working toward a financial goal.
Possible difficulty
A lack of confidence or a clear goal can make it harder to use the opportunities available to you.
Focus
The long view matters here: building stability gradually rather than expecting a quick financial fix.
Reflection question
What is already helping me move toward my financial goal?
Wellbeing and self-care
Overall meaning
In matters of well-being, The Star is associated with a return to calm after stress. The focus is on emotional recovery and the possibility of feeling steadier within yourself.
Possible support
Rest, time in nature, and creative activities without pressure may offer support during a period of recovery.
Possible difficulty
The constant demand to be more productive can leave little room to simply accept how you feel right now.
Focus
Your emotional well-being deserves as much attention as physical fatigue.
Reflection question
Which activities leave me feeling calmer afterward?
Personal growth
Overall meaning
The Star can describe a clearer sense of self after reexamining old beliefs. It brings a desire to live with less pretense, rediscover meaning in your pursuits, and make room for new ideas.
Possible support
Paying attention to your inner responses and remaining open to new ideas can help you understand yourself better.
Possible difficulty
A limiting self-image or a familiar mask that makes it hard to recognize what you truly want.
Focus
Notice which pursuits you want to find meaning in again, and what purpose the changes underway serve.
Reflection questions
- Which old ideas about myself no longer fit who I am?
- What activity would I like to find personal meaning in again?
The Star — Reversed
General
Overall meaning
The Star reversed shows hope growing weaker. Difficulties seem impossible to overcome, an old goal no longer inspires you, and self-doubt obscures a possible way forward.
Another reading concerns unrealistic hope. The question here is not how to believe more strongly, but whether it is time to release an expectation that no longer holds up against reality.
Possible support
Support from a trusted friend or mentor may help you regain a perspective that is difficult to find alone.
Possible difficulty
Being closed off to offered help. Disappointment may come with a refusal to accept support or respond when someone else asks for it.
Focus
Examine where your hope is grounded in real circumstances and where it persists only because letting go of a dream is difficult.
Reflection questions
- Is disappointment making it harder for me to notice the help available to me?
- Which hope am I finding difficult to test against reality?
Relationships
Overall meaning
In love, The Star reversed can reflect a loss of confidence in your own attractiveness and excessive self-criticism. Disappointment sometimes hardens into the belief that relationships can bring nothing but pain.
In an existing relationship, it may point to distance and weakening faith in the bond. This reading alone does not explain what the other person is thinking or why they are pulling away.
Possible support
In a romantic context, it helps to focus again on your own qualities rather than judging yourself solely by disappointments in love.
Possible difficulty
Fear of opening up again can keep distance between people, even when closeness is what you want.
Focus
In a relationship, consider what is behind the doubts about your shared future and which concerns you can discuss openly.
Reflection questions
- Am I judging myself too harshly because of past relationship experiences?
- What doubt do I need to talk about openly?
Work and study
Overall meaning
The Star reversed can describe a creative slump, fading enthusiasm, and disappointment with your professional prospects. Work that once inspired you now feels like a draining routine, raising doubts about whether to keep going in the same direction.
Possible support
A different approach to familiar work may help restore motivation and reveal room for change.
Possible difficulty
Disappointment can extinguish the desire to keep working or try a different approach.
Focus
Look at the gap between how interested you once felt in your work and the way your working days are structured now.
Reflection questions
- What part of my approach to work is worth reconsidering?
- What exactly has stopped inspiring me about this work?
Money and resources
Overall meaning
The Star reversed can describe discouragement over financial difficulties and the premature feeling that nothing can be changed. In this state, available opportunities may be hard to see.
There is also a more concrete reading: money leaking away in ways that need to be identified and stopped.
Possible support
A financial plan and support from someone you can discuss your difficulties with may help you avoid facing your worries alone.
Possible difficulty
Money continues to drain away through a leak that undermines financial stability.
Focus
Notice where your money is going and which losses you may be able to stop.
Reflection question
Which outflow of money should I examine more closely?
Wellbeing and self-care
Overall meaning
The Star reversed can describe emotional exhaustion, low spirits, and difficulty believing your strength will return. Keeping up your usual pace can feel hard, even when you want to feel better as soon as possible.
Possible support
Taking time to rest and reaching out for support with emotional difficulties. You do not have to carry everything alone.
Possible difficulty
Demanding more and more of yourself when your energy is already low, rather than allowing yourself a break.
Focus
Notice whether your daily life still includes time free from demands that you can devote to caring for yourself.
Reflection question
Am I expecting myself to keep up my usual pace when I need rest?
Personal growth
Overall meaning
An earlier vision of the future may no longer match what matters to you now. The Star reversed is associated with losing your inner sense of direction: everyday life goes on, but you feel less and less engaged in it.
The card can also describe showing others a version of yourself they will find acceptable while hiding what you fear they might reject.
Possible support
Quiet self-reflection and a more compassionate attitude toward yourself can create room to examine your doubts without adding further harshness.
Possible difficulty
Everyday habits can become disconnected from what truly matters, sustaining a feeling that life lacks meaning.
Focus
Consider whether ordinary days still leave room for activities and decisions that hold personal meaning for you.
Reflection question
Is there still room in my ordinary day for what matters to me?
Roles in a spread
Position examples
A position gives the card a question, such as what helps or what gets in the way. That question shapes how you read its meaning.
The Star — Upright
Situation
After an upheaval, there is room to recover: hope, inspiration, and a sense of direction begin to return.
Influence
A past upheaval may have changed old beliefs and made room for a more open attitude toward yourself and life.
Motivation
A desire to find meaning, inspiration, and hope for the future again. Generosity may be another motivation: sharing the good you have received yourself.
Support
The experience of overcoming difficulties becomes a source of support, helping you recognize your resilience again.
Obstacle
Hope can take the place of necessary action. In the obstacle position, The Star draws attention to the difference between an inspiring goal and putting it into practice.
Focus of attention
Consider what action should follow a hopeful idea. Inspiration points the way, but it does not solve the problem on its own.
Next step
Return to what inspires you and connect a dream with an action you can take. Talking with someone who makes it easier to look ahead may help you move forward.
Possible development
What comes next may bring a clearer sense of possibility and a return to peace of mind.
The Star — Reversed
Situation
The direction you were following no longer inspires you. Doubt and disappointment make it difficult to see where to go next.
Influence
Repeated disappointments can shape your current outlook, making it difficult to believe anything can change.
Motivation
The desire to avoid another disappointment may become a motivation. Choices then become driven more by fear than by interest in what you want to do.
Support
Support from a trusted friend or mentor may help you see the situation from a wider perspective.
Obstacle
Refusing help when it is offered can keep you feeling stuck. The card can also point to being closed off to someone else's need for support.
Focus of attention
Pay attention to an expectation that is difficult to reconcile with reality. Sometimes you need to acknowledge the limits of a particular hope, rather than convince yourself to believe more strongly.
Next step
Explore what is happening to your sense of hope. If disappointment has overshadowed it, support and reconnecting with your aspirations may help. If an expectation has become unrealistic, consider letting it go.
Possible development
What follows may feel incomplete or disappointing. In this reading, the issue is not only outward change but also the continuing loss of hope.
Combination examples
Card combinations are in development. For now, here are a few examples.
The Star + Queen of Pentacles
The Star ( upright) + Queen of Pentacles ( upright)
- Example question:
- How can I bring a dream into everyday life?
- Example interpretation:
This combination may suggest the ability to balance dreaming with practicality.
The Star + Three of Cups
The Star ( upright) + Three of Cups ( upright)
- Example question:
- What defines my connection with the people close to me?
- Example interpretation:
This pair can describe good relationships with loved ones.
The Star + Five of Swords
The Star ( upright) + Five of Swords ( upright)
- Example question:
- What is happening to hope in this situation?
- Example interpretation:
This pair may suggest the shattering of illusions and a loss of hope.
The Star + The Devil
The Star ( upright) + The Devil ( upright)
- Example question:
- What opposing attitudes toward the future are in conflict?
- Example interpretation:
In Joan Bunning's approach, the cards are opposites: The Star's hope contrasts with The Devil's loss of faith in the future.
Reading example
An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.
The Star — Upright
Situation:
After a painful breakup, you want to meet someone new again. But the thought of another relationship brings doubt: is it worth opening up if the same thing could happen again?
Question:
What will help me open up to relationships again?
-
Card drawn:
Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help» and getting The Star (upright).
Interpretation:
The Star is associated with the return of trust and confidence after a breakup. In this situation, it invites you to notice not only past pain but also the desire for closeness that has begun to emerge.
You can make room for a new connection without demanding immediate certainty. A starting point may be a conversation in which you can show interest and speak honestly about yourself.
The Star — Reversed
Situation:
After a painful breakup, you want to meet someone new again. But the thought of another relationship brings doubt: is it worth opening up if the same thing could happen again?
Question:
What will help me open up to relationships again?
-
Card drawn:
Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help» and getting The Star (reversed).
Interpretation:
The Star reversed draws attention to whether past disappointment has turned into an overly harsh judgment of yourself. It helps to distinguish caution about meeting someone new from the belief that an unsuccessful relationship makes you unworthy of love.
One possible step is to remember the qualities you want to bring to a close relationship. Then the question becomes not only whether the pain will return, but also what kind of relationship you want to give a chance.
Yes / No
The Star — Upright
Why this answer
Hope, a clear aspiration, and faith in the possibility of change support a positive answer. The Star points toward a hopeful direction and the possibility of continuing with your plans.
A clarification
The positive prospect may still be some way off. If the question concerns a quick result, remember that this “yes” speaks to what is possible, not how soon it will happen.
The Star — Reversed
Why this answer
Loss of direction and doubt make it harder to follow through on your plans. The card leans toward a negative answer: your previous expectations no longer offer enough reason to view this path with hope.
A clarification
When a clear goal has been lost, it may help to reconsider your direction and expectations first. This is especially relevant when asking whether to stay on the same course, even though it is no longer clear where that course leads.
A question to consider
What do I need to clarify in my plan before moving forward?
Correspondences
Connections with numbers, elements and other symbols add depth to the card’s imagery. They can differ between traditions.
Number — XVII (17)
Case reduces 17 to 8 by adding its digits and links The Star to Strength. This is a way of connecting cards within his symbolic system, not a meaning of the number that every school must accept.
Element — Air
The Air correspondence is associated with inspiration and originality of thought. It does not become Water simply because the woman is shown with jugs.
Astrology — Aquarius
The image of the water bearer connects the card with Aquarius. In this system, it relates to meditative understanding and the unfolding of inner knowledge.
Letter — Tzaddi (צ), “fishhook”
The fishhook becomes an image of focused attention drawing understanding from the depths. Case associates this letter and card with meditation.
Tree of Life — Path 28: Netzach–Yesod
The path connects the sephiroth Netzach and Yesod. Its name, “Natural Intelligence,” refers to understanding the workings of nature and deepening knowledge of them.
