This guide brings together traditional and modern readings. Interpretations and answers may differ between authors and schools.

Go to meanings
Ten of Pentacles

Under the archway, different stages of a human life meet. An old man sits by the entrance, with adults and a child nearby, while dogs move freely among them. The home was there before its youngest inhabitant had built a thing. The child enters a world where much has been prepared through the work of others.

The pentacles are spread across the entire scene, as if prosperity no longer belongs to a single purse. It has become walls, habits, names, and the ability to rely on others. A legacy like this passes down both support and expectations that are not always easy to meet. The old man remains part of the shared space, even as life continues to move around him. The child reaches toward a dog, unaware of how much of other people’s time it took for this courtyard to become an ordinary home.

Image and symbols

Card image

In the left foreground sits an elderly man with a gray beard, wearing a loose, patterned robe. His head is turned to the right, and one hand reaches toward one of two white dogs.

A man and a woman stand beneath a stone archway. To their right, a child can be seen touching a dog. The arch bears decorated shields; beyond it are buildings with red roofs and a tower, patches of blue sky, and greenery.

Ten round pentacles are overlaid across the entire scene, from the top edge to the lower part of the image.

Traditional context

Waite associates the card with wealth, family matters, archives, ancestry, and the family home. In an additional list, the house becomes a meaning in its own right, refined by neighboring cards.

His reversed meanings are varied: chance, losses, theft, and gambling appear alongside gifts, dowries, and pensions. His additions include the possibility of both favorable and unfavorable chance. Reducing the historical reversed meaning solely to financial ruin would therefore be inaccurate.

In the Golden Dawn, the Ten of Pentacles is called the “Lord of Wealth.” Book T describes the height of material attainment, but also allows for inertia and partial loss. This is a system of correspondences and card combinations, not a ready-made list of RWS upright and reversed meanings.

Modern readings expand on themes of endurance, legacy, and established order. Reversed, the card can suggest that this structure is fragile or that its rules need to be reconsidered. Another possibility is a stable life that has grown dull: a lack of novelty does not amount to a loss of prosperity.

This context applies to both upright and reversed positions.

A gray-haired elder in a patterned robe

The experience and standing of an older generation. His presence connects prosperity with what has been built over a lifetime.

Adults and a child beside the elder

Continuity across generations: what one person builds becomes a legacy for those who follow.

Two white dogs at the elder’s feet

Loyalty and affection at home. The animals bring closeness and lasting relationships to the theme of property ownership.

A stone archway and the buildings beyond

A sheltered, lived-in home and a solid material foundation for life.

Heraldic shields on the archway

Family history, ancestry, and belonging to a lineage.

Grape clusters and leaves in the pattern on the elder’s robe

The fruits of labor and material abundance. The botanical pattern is part of the clothing, not a vine growing nearby.

Ten pentacles arranged in the pattern of the Tree of Life

In an esoteric reading, the arrangement brings together the ten sephiroth, the stages of the Tree of Life. Material achievement is shown as part of a larger whole, not as a single coin in someone’s hand.

Colors

  • Red in the woman’s clothing and the rooftops

In Laura Joyce’s interpretation, the red tones of crafted objects belong to the earthy palette of prosperity: what matters is labor made tangible in fabric and buildings.

Meanings

Ten of Pentacles — Upright

General

Overall meaning

The Ten of Pentacles depicts prosperity and an established way of life. What has been achieved takes lasting form in a home, property, family ties, or an enterprise that can carry on without starting from scratch each time.

Continuity matters here: the result becomes part of a shared legacy. This is also a card of familiar structures, belonging to a family or community, and preserving what has stood the test of time.

Possible support

The experience and practical advice of elders may help.

Possible difficulty

A family’s reputation can limit your freedom to choose.

Focus

Look at what you have built that benefits others and has the potential to endure.

Reflection questions
  • What in my life is already built to last?
  • What experience from older generations could help me?

Relationships

Overall meaning

For couples, the card speaks to a dependable partnership, a shared home, and long-term family plans. Relationships between families and the possibility of building a life together become important.

Among loved ones more broadly, it suggests easy companionship and a willingness to share what you have. A family gathering or a return home also belongs to this range of meanings.

Possible support

The dependability of loved ones and their willingness to support one another.

Possible difficulty

Family expectations may limit your choice of partner and way of life.

Focus

Do not leave your gratitude for closeness unspoken: let your partner know you value your relationship.

Reflection questions
  • In what ways can I rely on my loved ones?
  • How do I show my partner that I value our connection?

Work and study

Overall meaning

An established enterprise, a family business, or work at a long-standing organization. The card speaks to a lasting career and results that can be preserved and passed on to the next generation.

Possible support

A capable, dependable team invested in a shared outcome.

Possible difficulty

Leadership’s attachment to old rules can stand in the way of improving how work is done.

Focus

Long-term professional growth takes consistency and patience.

Reflection questions
  • What in my work could continue without my constant involvement?
  • How well does the way people work here suit me?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

Accumulated wealth, property, and long-term family security. In financial questions, the card can point to inheritance, ownership, and provision for several generations, not just current income.

Possible support

Savings set aside from current income for future needs.

Possible difficulty

Chasing a quick gain conflicts with the goal of preserving hard-won stability.

Focus

Clarify who owns family property and how it will be passed on.

Reflection question

How much of what I have today will still be available to me in the future?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

A sense of being settled, at ease, and content with life. Here, everyday well-being comes from both material security and meaningful human connection.

Possible support

Time with people and pets can be sustaining for an older person.

Possible difficulty

Even an older relative who is financially comfortable may feel lonely.

Focus

When you feel well, notice what helps you maintain that feeling.

Reflection questions
  • What helps me feel at ease in everyday life?
  • Are the older loved ones I care for getting enough companionship?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

Reflecting on your connection to family history. Success includes contributing to the lives of others, not just acquiring things for yourself.

Possible support

Family traditions, the experience of elders, and a sense of connection to what holds lasting value may offer support.

Possible difficulty

The need to uphold a family reputation can restrict independent choices.

Focus

Notice what legacy means to you beyond money and personal status.

Reflection question

What would I like to pass on besides possessions and money?

Ten of Pentacles — Reversed

General

Overall meaning

Something that seemed solid may prove vulnerable: prosperity is hard to sustain, family ties become strained, and familiar routines no longer feel secure.

Another shift concerns the meaning of success itself. An otherwise settled life may begin to feel restrictive when keeping up appearances means maintaining a lifestyle that is too costly or does not feel like your own.

There may also be boredom despite continued well-being. In this reading, the foundation is not collapsing; the temptation is to change everything simply for something new.

Possible support

A sense of self-worth independent of wealth can help you find your footing again.

Possible difficulty

Short-term gains or the appearance of success can displace concern for how stable your entire way of life really is.

Focus

Distinguish an actually unstable foundation from dissatisfaction with how your life appears to others.

Reflection questions
  • What has actually become less stable?
  • What am I maintaining mainly to impress others?

Relationships

Overall meaning

Family disputes, tension over money, or a mismatch between personal wishes and family expectations. Shared property and traditions may divide people rather than bring them together.

Sometimes the card refers to a less traditional family structure. In a long-term partnership, another possible reading is boredom: familiarity does not necessarily mean the connection has run its course.

Possible support

Clear boundaries and renegotiated ground rules for living together may help during family disagreements.

Possible difficulty

Family approval and social compatibility can overshadow what life together actually feels like.

Focus

If a stable partnership has grown dull, consider talking about it and trying something together.

Reflection questions
  • Which family expectation do I find hard to agree with?
  • What could we discuss before deciding the relationship has run its course?

Work and study

Overall meaning

An established workplace or family business may lose its footing; a once-familiar career path no longer offers the security it seemed to promise.

The card also speaks to reconsidering a career kept only for the sake of safety. At the same time, a stable job may simply have grown dull. Questioning your choice does not necessarily mean the job is about to fall apart.

Possible support

Revisiting decisions at work can help you see what is still worth preserving and where more stable prospects have emerged.

Possible difficulty

In a family business, family ties may matter more for advancement than professional contribution.

Focus

If you run your own business, revisit past decisions and see which parts of the work can still be preserved.

Reflection questions
  • What exactly bothers me: the job’s insecurity or its familiarity?
  • What determines opportunities for professional growth here?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

Losses, debt, or disputed family property may undermine financial stability. Even when there is an appearance of wealth, how long it will last remains an open question.

The historical reading by Waite also includes funds received as a gift, dowry, or pension. This nuance differs from the modern emphasis on the fragility of accumulated wealth.

Possible support

Help reassessing a financial plan when the old one no longer provides stability.

Possible difficulty

An expensive lifestyle can drain savings.

Focus

Check whether a new, risky decision could jeopardize the security you have already built.

Reflection questions
  • What expenses am I maintaining to preserve my accustomed standard of living?
  • What have I already accumulated that this decision could put at risk?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

Worry about the future, or the feeling that no amount of prosperity is ever enough. A life that looks settled from the outside may feel unsatisfying, especially when maintaining security leaves little room to live peacefully in the present.

Possible support

If boredom is the issue, noticing what is already good can help, without making changes just to shake things up.

Possible difficulty

Caring for everyone can feel like a heavy obligation, leaving a person feeling trapped.

Focus

Feeling well does not remove the need for care in everyday activities.

Reflection questions
  • When does caring for loved ones become a heavy obligation for me?
  • What good things do I stop noticing when I am bored?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

Reexamining inherited ideas of success. A materially secure life may not be the life you want; stepping away from an expected family path becomes part of defining yourself.

Possible support

Self-worth that is not tied to wealth.

Possible difficulty

A constant need for others’ approval makes it harder to choose according to your own convictions.

Focus

Compare the familiar picture of success with the life you genuinely want to sustain.

Reflection questions
  • What choices do I keep making to earn my family’s approval?
  • What do I value in myself regardless of income and possessions?

Roles in a spread

Position examples

A position gives the card a question, such as what helps or what gets in the way. That question shapes how you read its meaning.

Ten of Pentacles — Upright

Situation

Hard-won prosperity becomes a shared legacy; home, family, and preserving what has been built come to the fore.

Influence

Decisions are shaped by family customs and expectations to carry on what older generations began.

Motivation

A desire to provide for loved ones and see your work benefit more than just yourself.

Support

An existing foundation supports future plans: you do not have to build everything from scratch on your own.

Obstacle

Family expectations may constrain personal choice.

Focus of attention

Notice what has already helped create prosperity.

Next step

Turn what you have achieved into support for others: share what you can offer, even if it is only a kind word.

Possible development

Consistency can strengthen prosperity over the long term.

Ten of Pentacles — Reversed

Situation

Shared stability comes under pressure from financial losses or family conflict.

Influence

The prevailing idea of success around you may be guiding your choices more than your own desires.

Motivation

A need for others’ approval and to show that you are successful.

Support

In a reading about boredom, the good things already present in everyday life can still offer support.

Obstacle

The drive to preserve outward stability can crowd out genuine connection and the ability to enjoy the present.

Focus of attention

If everything is stable, check whether you are mistaking boredom for a need to make sweeping changes.

Next step

Reconsider the family expectations and measures of success that keep you from choosing your own path.

Possible development

Short-term success may give way to instability if the long-term foundation is neglected.

Combination examples

Card combinations are in development. For now, here are a few examples.

Ten of Pentacles + The Hierophant

Ten of Pentacles ( upright) + The Hierophant ( upright)

Example question:
What role do established rules play here?
Example interpretation:

Together, the cards reinforce the themes of tradition and following an established order.

Ten of Pentacles + The Lovers

Ten of Pentacles ( upright) + The Lovers ( upright)

Example question:
What keeps people together over time?
Example interpretation:

In this combination, the lasting nature of a partnership and family ties come into sharper focus.

Ten of Pentacles + Three of Wands

Ten of Pentacles ( upright) + Three of Wands ( upright)

Example question:
What matters more right now: a tried-and-true order or exploring something new?
Example interpretation:

The familiar stability of the Ten of Pentacles contrasts with the Three of Wands’ movement toward the unknown.

Reading example

An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.

Ten of Pentacles — Upright

  1. Situation:

Your relatives are inviting you to join the family business. Its stability and the chance to work together appeal to you, but you are unsure how well this path fits your own plans.

  2. Question:

What should I consider before saying yes?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What to consider» and getting Ten of Pentacles (upright).

  4. Interpretation:

The Ten of Pentacles draws attention to what was already in place before you: an established business, experience, and people you can rely on. You are choosing more than a job here; you are deciding whether to take part in a shared history.

A business like this may have established ways of doing things. Before you decide, it is worth discussing what others expect of you and whether there will be room for your ideas.

Ten of Pentacles — Reversed

  1. Situation:

Your relatives are inviting you to join the family business. Its stability and the chance to work together appeal to you, but you are unsure how well this path fits your own plans.

  2. Question:

What should I consider before saying yes?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What to consider» and getting Ten of Pentacles (reversed).

  4. Interpretation:

The reversed Ten of Pentacles invites you to distinguish between a secure job and a life that suits you. Joining the family business may seem like the natural choice, but that alone does not answer whether you want to carry it forward.

Try imagining the offer without the argument “this is how our family does things.” Then talk with your relatives about the work that interests you and how closely it matches their expectations.

Yes / No

Ten of Pentacles — Upright

Why this answer

Yes. This answer rests on a solid foundation, stability, and results that last. This reading is especially clear for questions about a shared home, a family business, and long-term plans.

A clarification

If the question is about a quick gain, the answer shifts: the card leans toward “no.” Its positive answer concerns building lasting stability, not taking a risk in hopes of getting rich quickly.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

Am I looking to strengthen my position for the long term or make a quick gain?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.

Ten of Pentacles — Reversed

Why this answer

Probably not. Family disagreements and a shaky material foundation make lasting results harder to achieve. This answer applies to plans that depend on shared well-being.

A clarification

Consider unresolved disputes and questions involving money or property that your plan depends on. Until they are settled, its foundation remains uncertain.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

Correspondences

Connections with numbers, elements and other symbols add depth to the card’s imagery. They can differ between traditions.

Number — X (10)

Completion and consolidation of results. In the suit of Pentacles, this is the fullest expression of material achievement; completion does not in itself imply further growth.

Tradition: Golden Dawn, Book T

Element — Earth

The material side of life: property and prosperity given lasting form.

Tradition: The Hermetic tradition of the Golden Dawn

Astrology — Mercury in Virgo, third decan: 20°–30°

This pairing is associated with business acumen and the completion of material accumulation. It is the card’s astrological correspondence, not a timeline for when something will happen.

Tradition: Golden Dawn, Book T

Tree of Life — Malkuth in the world of Assiah

Malkuth, “Kingdom,” refers to a fully manifested result. Assiah establishes the material level of the suit: here, achievement takes the form of property, prosperity, and an established way of life.
