Eight of Wands
Descriptions and symbolism are based on the card’s classic illustration in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. Details of the artwork may differ in other editions of the deck.
This guide brings together traditional and modern readings. Interpretations and answers may differ between authors and schools.
Eight wands cross the sky like an important message already sent on its way. There are no people in the scene: the nearly parallel lines alone convey speed and direction. Below them lie a river and green hills. The stillness of the landscape makes the flight feel faster still.
Waite compared this speed to that of an urgent messenger and emphasized how close the flight was to its end. Here, you can sense a brief interval between sending and receiving: movement has begun, but no response has come yet. The wands have not touched the ground, but their downward angle guides the eye to where their flight will end.

Image and symbols
Card image
Eight wands with small green shoots cross a blue sky diagonally from upper left to lower right. They are nearly parallel; none touches the ground.
Below are green hills, trees, a small building on the left, and a winding river. No people or animals appear in the scene.
Traditional context
In Waite's account, the flight of the wands is nearly over: what is coming is close at hand, and action is swiftly bringing matters to a conclusion. His divinatory meanings include activity, haste, great hope for a favorable ending, and “arrows of love.”
For the reversed card, Waite lists jealousy, inner discord, remorse, and quarrels. He also mentions marital disagreements both here and in his supplementary list for the card without a reversal notation. Waite himself cautions that supplementary meanings can differ from the primary ones.
In the Golden Dawn system, the card is called “Lord of Swiftness” and corresponds to Mercury in Sagittarius. Its sudden burst of momentum may fade quickly. In this system, whether the card is favorable depends on its surrounding cards in a spread, rather than simply on whether it is reversed.
Modern interpretations explore themes of messages, travel, and accelerating developments in greater detail. The reversal can suggest either delays or excessive haste, with another nuance involving inner preparation for change.
Sergey Savchenko offers a notably different personal interpretation: the absence of people turns the scene into an image of pause and noninterference. This is a distinct approach, not a replacement for the meaning of swiftness throughout the RWS tradition.
Wands flying toward the ground
Swift progress and an approaching conclusion: in Waite's description, their flight is already nearing its end.
The wands are almost parallel
Coordinated movement in a shared direction, with actions that do not get in one another's way.
Small leaves and shoots on the wands
In modern symbolic interpretations, these suggest growth and new possibilities.
The river at the bottom of the image
The flow of life. In modern readings, the river can also reflect feelings moving in harmony with the changes underway.
A small building on the hill to the left
In a modern symbolic reading, it may represent a goal worth keeping in sight amid the speed of events.
No people in the scene
In a conventional reading, the focus is on movement itself. In Sergey Savchenko's interpretation, the empty scene instead becomes an image of time standing still.
Colors
- Blue — the sky
Clarity and freedom of movement; the open sky strengthens the sense that nothing stands in the way.
- Green — the hills and ground beneath the wands
Growth and the potential for development: the wands fly above a fertile, living landscape.
Meanings
Eight of Wands — Upright
General
Overall meaning
Events gather momentum: news arrives, decisions come more quickly, and something already underway moves toward a conclusion. This describes a process that has already begun, rather than simply an intention to start someday.
The card brings together activity, strong hope, and the prospect of a result soon. It can point to travel or rapidly changing circumstances. It is usually read favorably, but the direction of change depends on the question and surrounding cards.
Possible support
Focusing on a single goal helps you work with a fast pace without scattering your attention.
Possible difficulty
Several appealing opportunities may arise at once. Trying to seize them all can be overwhelming.
Focus
Check whether the previous task is finished before moving on to the next.
Reflection questions
- What has already been set in motion in my situation?
- What is nearing completion?
Relationships
Overall meaning
In romantic matters, the card is associated with sudden attraction, lively communication, and growing closer quickly. In an established relationship, it may suggest renewed excitement or a move toward making plans together.
In friendship, it can describe bonds that form quickly or a renewal of contact. There is also a distinct historical reading: in Waite's supplementary list, this card is associated with disagreements between spouses.
Possible support
A shared sense of direction, alongside room for individual interests, can support a couple.
Possible difficulty
Trying to speed up closeness by pressuring a partner.
Focus
Check in about plans as a couple: needs can change even when the relationship is developing easily and quickly.
Reflection questions
- What pace of growing closer feels right to me?
- What shared plans would I like to talk about?
Work and study
Overall meaning
Work picks up pace: a project moves to its next phase, professional contacts become more active, and an offer of a new role may appear. The card is also associated with business travel and rapid career progress.
Possible support
A well-coordinated team whose members are working toward the same goal.
Possible difficulty
Multiple simultaneous tasks turn momentum into a scramble.
Focus
Consider whether swift progress is taking you in the professional direction you truly want.
Reflection questions
- What is helping my project move faster right now?
- Am I moving in the right direction in my career?
Money and resources
Overall meaning
Money comes in and goes out quickly. The card describes an active flow of funds, which does not necessarily mean savings are growing.
Possible support
Tracking income and expenses helps you stay on top of money moving quickly.
Possible difficulty
Impulse purchases that are easy to make amid all the activity.
Focus
Keep an eye on the flow of money: income that arrives quickly can leave just as quickly through impulse purchases.
Reflection questions
- Am I keeping track of how much money comes in and how much goes out?
- Which purchases am I making on impulse?
Wellbeing and self-care
Overall meaning
Renewed energy, anticipation, and relief after a period of waiting. Rapid changes can feel invigorating, but a flood of experiences may also be tiring.
Possible support
Movement and active pursuits you have the energy for right now.
Possible difficulty
Too much activity and a disrupted sleep schedule.
Focus
Notice the line between feeling energized and pushing yourself too hard.
Reflection questions
- How do I feel about the pace of my life right now?
- Am I still making time for sleep?
Personal growth
Overall meaning
The card may mark a sudden realization: something previously overlooked in a familiar situation becomes clear. It is a moment of insight and new ideas.
Possible support
A readiness to act and openness to new experiences help you make use of growing interest.
Possible difficulty
New ideas may come faster than you can take them in. If you dive into too many areas of learning at once, it becomes difficult to stay with one long enough to absorb what you have discovered.
Focus
Keep your chosen direction in sight when new ideas and opportunities appear quickly.
Reflection question
What do I now see differently in a familiar situation?
Eight of Wands — Reversed
General
Overall meaning
Movement loses its coordination. A process may drag on, messages may not arrive on time, and waiting can become frustrating. Another interpretation of the reversal centers on excessive haste: there is plenty of activity, but important details are overlooked.
In Waite's historical list, inner discord, remorse, jealousy, and quarrels come to the fore. A modern reading also allows for a useful pause, when inner preparation comes before outward progress.
Possible support
A pause gives you a chance to examine the plan and see what needs adjusting.
Possible difficulty
Jumping from one idea to another keeps you from finishing what you started.
Focus
Consider whether your chosen course needs to change before you continue.
Reflection questions
- Where are events moving more slowly than I expected?
- What am I trying to rush without understanding the details?
Relationships
Overall meaning
In a couple, the card may describe communication breakdowns and mismatched pacing: growing closer takes longer than expected, or one partner pushes things forward. Historical meanings of jealousy and marital quarrels add the theme of tension between people who are close.
Among friends and family, another emphasis is possible: people struggle to coordinate plans, postpone get-togethers, and feel they no longer understand one another.
Possible support
Talking openly about misunderstandings helps restore connection with friends and family.
Possible difficulty
Acting or demanding an answer simply because waiting is difficult.
Focus
In romantic conversations, choose your words carefully: a hectic pace makes misunderstandings more likely.
Reflection questions
- Where are we struggling to agree on a pace or make plans?
- What would I like to clarify in our communication?
Work and study
Overall meaning
Work may be slowed by a missed opportunity, lengthy approvals, or poor team coordination. The opposite scenario is also possible: progress has been too fast, and new demands are still difficult to meet.
When starting a new job, the card may reflect a slow adjustment to the role. Learning and becoming familiar with responsibilities matter more here than immediately taking on a heavier workload.
Possible support
Help from an experienced colleague or mentor who can work through new responsibilities with you.
Possible difficulty
Poor coordination and disagreements within the team hold up a shared task.
Focus
Double-check the recipient, contact details, and delivery of an important message: a communication error can bring work to a halt.
Reflection questions
- What is holding up the work: a delay or demands increasing too quickly?
- Who can help me work through my new responsibilities?
Money and resources
Overall meaning
Financial matters are moving more slowly than expected. Payments may be delayed, and the income growth you hope for may feel frustratingly slow.
Possible support
Focusing on stability and long-term goals instead of expecting an immediate leap forward.
Possible difficulty
Impulse spending driven by the urge to soothe dissatisfaction with a purchase.
Focus
It is worth reviewing how you manage your finances before making a major decision.
Reflection questions
- How quickly do I expect money to come in?
- How does impatience affect my purchases?
Wellbeing and self-care
Overall meaning
After an intense period of acceleration, fatigue, irritation, or waning enthusiasm may follow. Sometimes slowing down brings relief, even if it looks like a loss of momentum from the outside.
There is a constructive reading, too: a time to tend to your well-being and daily routines before increasing your activity again.
Possible support
Rest and activities that help ease tension.
Possible difficulty
Trying to maintain a sprint pace all the time can leave you depleted.
Focus
Notice how much energy you have left with your current routine.
Reflection questions
- How do I feel after the recent increase in pace?
- What changes in how I feel when I slow down?
Personal growth
Overall meaning
A new understanding may take time to form: outward changes are already visible, but the inner readiness to meet them has not caught up. This is a chance to clarify what truly matters instead of pushing yourself toward a decision.
The reversal may also suggest reconsidering your direction: what once kept you busy no longer aligns with what you want.
Another reading involves trying an unfamiliar approach for the sake of new experience, even if the outcome is uncertain.
Possible support
A conversation with a friend or mentor helps you see your goals from another angle.
Possible difficulty
Resistance to change makes it difficult to leave familiar routines behind.
Focus
Compare what you are doing now with what you truly want.
Reflection questions
- What matters to me when I stop rushing?
- What would I like to do differently than usual?

Reading example
An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.
Eight of Wands — Upright
Situation:
After a long job search, you receive an offer in a field that is new to you. It appeals to you, but the quick transition feels daunting: your familiar way of life would have to change considerably.
Question:
How should I approach this offer?
-
Card drawn:
Imagine drawing a card for the position «Next Step» and getting Eight of Wands (upright).
Interpretation:
The Eight of Wands reflects a moment when waiting gives way to a real opportunity to act. Here, it can be read as encouragement to explore your interest in a new professional role.
Rather than putting it off, consider discussing the offer: find out how the role aligns with your career goals and express your interest.
Eight of Wands — Reversed
Situation:
After a long job search, you receive an offer in a field that is new to you. It appeals to you, but the quick transition feels daunting: your familiar way of life would have to change considerably.
Question:
How should I approach this offer?
-
Card drawn:
Imagine drawing a card for the position «Next Step» and getting Eight of Wands (reversed).
Interpretation:
The reversed Eight of Wands draws attention to the gap between the speed of a transition and your readiness for new demands. An appealing offer may prove difficult not because of the change itself, but because of the pace at which you would need to grow into the role.
One possible next step is to clarify responsibilities and available support before agreeing to a quick start. That way, the decision rests on more than the desire to put the job search behind you.
Yes / No
Eight of Wands — Upright
Why this answer
Yes. Swift progress, news, and emerging opportunities give the card an affirmative answer to questions about moving forward with a plan.
Eight of Wands — Reversed
Why this answer
Probably not. Reversed, the card connects a negative answer to haste: the decision needs more thought, and rushing straight into action could complicate matters.
A clarification
Even a plan you feel confident about deserves another look: confidence alone is not a reason to rush the decision.
A question to consider
What in my plan still needs more thought?
Correspondences
Connections with numbers, elements and other symbols add depth to the card’s imagery. They can differ between traditions.
Number — VIII (8)
In this system's general table, the Eights are associated with success in a specific undertaking, limited to that undertaking. For the Eight of Wands, this adds to the idea of an impulse that is swift but not necessarily lasting.
Element — Fire
The fiery suit is associated with active force. In this card, it appears as a sudden surge that may burn out quickly.
Astrology — Mercury in Sagittarius, first decan (1°–10°)
This pairing corresponds to the “Lord of Swiftness”: rapid exchange of messages, mobility, and a swift impulse.
Tree of Life — Hod in the suit of Wands (Hod of Yod)
In Book T, this association is linked to hasty communication and swiftness. It is the card's correspondence within the order's Kabbalistic framework.
