Go to meanings
Six of Wands

A victor rides among people who share in the celebration. A laurel wreath on his head sets him apart from the crowd; another, tied to his staff, is raised above the procession. The rider sits upright on a pale horse, with companions walking beside him. The height of the saddle separates him from those around him, yet the celebration brings them together.

Waite also left room in this image for good news, ceremoniously delivered by a royal messenger. In that reading, attention turns to the person bringing news everyone has been waiting for. The joy belongs to the whole gathering: the news touches their own lives, giving each person a reason to lift their head toward the rider.

Core meaning

Well-earned success comes into view: your efforts are recognized, and support from others strengthens your confidence. The card also speaks of good news and hopes fulfilled.

Image and symbols

Card image

At the center is a rider dressed in yellow with a dark red cloak. His face is turned to the viewer's right, and he wears a laurel wreath.

The rider holds a leafy wand. A second wreath is attached near its top with a red ribbon. The pale horse is covered by a large green cloth, and its head is visible on the right.

Five more wands rise behind the rider, while partially obscured figures can be seen on the left. The background is a blue sky.

Traditional context

For Waite, the card primarily signifies triumph, important news, and the fulfillment of hope. His main list of reversed meanings includes apprehension, fear of betrayal or disloyalty, and an indefinite delay.

In a supplementary list, Waite offers different meanings: for the upright card, loss of trust and betrayal by a friend; for the reversed card, fulfillment of a hope long deferred. Waite himself acknowledges the contradictory nature of these additional meanings.

Modern Tarot guides associate the card with recognition and self-esteem. Biddy Tarot specifically highlights personal achievement without public recognition as one possible meaning of the reversed card.

This context applies to both upright and reversed positions.

A rider elevated above the companions on foot

Leadership and a prominent place among others. The rider's elevated position conveys dignity, but can also suggest a sense of superiority.

Laurel wreaths on the rider's head and wand

Victory and honor. The repeated wreath links personal achievement with recognition from others.

The raised wand in the rider's hand

Willpower and purposeful action.

Companions on foot carrying wands behind the rider

Community, support, and public recognition. The victor is not shown alone.

The horse beneath the rider

Strength and successful progress toward a goal.

The horse's elaborate, voluminous covering

Ceremony and a display of status. A more critical reading might see the extravagance as an excessive desire to impress.

Colors

  • White — the visible parts of the horse

Purity of intention and nobility as symbolic ideals of victory.

  • Red — the rider's cloak

Courage, passion, and readiness to act.

  • Green — the horse's covering

May emphasize renewal, growth, and continued development after success.

  • Blue — the sky

May convey clarity, lightness, and the carefree feeling of the moment.

Meanings

Six of Wands — Upright

General

Overall meaning

The Six of Wands represents success achieved and recognized. After competition or a difficult stretch, your efforts produce a visible result, giving you reason to feel proud and accept congratulations.

The card is also associated with good news and hope for a favorable outcome. At its heart is not only the victory itself, but also the way it becomes known to others.

Possible support

Support from like-minded people helps you move toward a shared goal. You don't have to do everything alone.

Possible difficulty

Success can turn into complacency, with self-confidence becoming a belief that everyone else is less capable.

Focus

Don't rush past what you've achieved. You can celebrate your success and then continue the work. One victory isn't the end of the road.

Reflection questions
  • What result can I recognize as an achievement of my own?
  • Whose support helps me keep going?

Relationships

Overall meaning

For a couple, the card speaks of a shared goal, challenges overcome, and pride in each other. In family matters, it can point to agreement and cooperation when loved ones share an understanding of what they want to achieve.

In friendship, it suggests mutual recognition and joy in each other's achievements. When meeting someone new, it can reflect confidence, appeal, and a willingness to show interest.

Possible support

Mutual encouragement strengthens friendship: one person's success becomes a reason to celebrate together rather than compete.

Possible difficulty

One person's success can turn into an expectation that a loved one should always give way to them.

Focus

In friendships, notice everyone's contribution, not just that of the most visible person.

Reflection questions
  • Can I be happy for a loved one's success without comparing it to my own?
  • Do our shared plans leave room for what each of us wants?

Work and study

Overall meaning

Professional recognition, successfully completing a project, advancement, or a reward for your contribution. The card can also describe a promising milestone that makes it easier to move forward.

In education, it can suggest successfully demonstrating what you've learned through an exam, a defense of your work, or a qualification assessment.

Possible support

A coordinated team, a clear plan of action, and a leader people can rally around all help.

Possible difficulty

Recognition can grow into professional arrogance and a sense of superiority over colleagues.

Focus

When you receive praise for a shared accomplishment, acknowledge the people who helped make it possible.

Reflection questions
  • Which contribution of mine to our shared work deserves more visibility?
  • Who should I thank for their help?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

A financial reward for results: payment, a bonus, or another form of recognition for work. Another theme is a more secure financial position after a difficult period.

Possible support

Consistency and persistence in financial matters can help you through a difficult period and build greater stability.

Possible difficulty

Success can make it easy to overestimate your means and spend too much on things you don't need.

Focus

When discussing compensation, don't undervalue your work. Recognition of your contribution also means considering fair pay.

Reflection questions
  • How do I assess the compensation I receive for my contribution?
  • Am I spending more than usual simply because things are going well?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

Satisfaction in your efforts, renewed enthusiasm, and a return of self-trust after an emotionally difficult period.

Possible support

Recognizing what you've achieved and hearing encouraging words from others can help sustain motivation.

Possible difficulty

The determination to keep achieving more can crowd out rest and attention to fatigue.

Focus

Notice not just your next goal, but also the difficult stretch you've already made it through.

Reflection questions
  • What about my efforts already deserves some kindness toward myself?
  • Am I putting off rest to pursue the next achievement?

Possible support

Supportive friendships can inspire growth and help you recognize your strengths.

Possible difficulty

The outward image of a winner can become more important than how you actually feel, leaving you constantly trying to prove that everything is going well.

Focus

Allow yourself to acknowledge what you've accomplished without embarrassment or guilt about succeeding.

Reflection questions
  • How has coming through this challenge changed the way I see myself?
  • Does my image as a successful person hide how I really feel?

Six of Wands — Reversed

General

Overall meaning

Reversed, the Six of Wands can suggest a delayed victory or one that brings less recognition than expected. Setbacks, lost support or standing, and doubts about your abilities are possible themes. Another imbalance is arrogance after success.

There is also a quieter reading: personal achievement without public recognition. You may choose to keep an accomplishment to yourself; in that case, a lack of praise doesn't mean a lack of results.

Possible support

A more experienced person may be able to help by taking the lead while you build the confidence or preparation you need.

Possible difficulty

Fear of falling short of expectations holds you back from acting. Even a goal you genuinely want can start to feel like a test of your worth.

Focus

Distinguish a lack of results from a lack of recognition: you may have reached your goal without feeling the satisfaction you expected.

Reflection questions
  • Am I missing the outcome itself, or recognition for what I've achieved?
  • Whose expectations am I afraid of falling short of?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In a couple, the card can reflect feeling undervalued, rivalry, and an uncomfortable division of roles. The other person's success starts to feel like your own defeat, or one partner is no longer comfortable with the other taking the lead. Broken promises can weaken trust.

In friendship, the card speaks of help that goes unnoticed, things left unsaid, and a lack of mutual involvement.

Possible support

In friendship, restoring mutual respect can provide a foundation: notice the help you receive and acknowledge each other's efforts.

Possible difficulty

Keeping score can complicate a relationship: responding to a hurtful act in kind so you don't feel you've lost.

Focus

In friendship, consider whether care goes both ways and whether an important hurt has gone unspoken.

Reflection questions
  • What help have I offered in a friendship that I wish had been noticed?
  • Am I trying to win an argument at the expense of our closeness?

Work and study

Overall meaning

Work may fall short of the expected result or recognition: a project fails, someone else receives the promotion, or your previous standing declines. Sometimes, rather than a single setback, the card describes stagnation and a loss of interest in your work.

Possible support

When a team is at odds, cooperation can be rebuilt by listening to people's grievances and restoring trust.

Possible difficulty

Promises may get ahead of what you can actually deliver. The desire to appear more capable can make it harder to honor your commitments.

Focus

In client-facing work, examine the quality of your service. A loss of recognition may stem from specific dissatisfaction with the outcome.

Reflection questions
  • Is my work lacking in quality, or is it lacking recognition?
  • Am I promising more than I can deliver?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

Expected compensation may be delayed or fall short of the effort invested. The card is also associated with financial losses: an unsuccessful purchase, disappointment with the outcome of an investment, or a gradual decline in financial circumstances.

Possible support

Taking an active role in your finances and revisiting decisions that haven't produced the expected results can offer support.

Possible difficulty

Wanting to appear more financially successful can lead to showy spending and strain relationships with others.

Focus

Compare the reward you expected with the actual financial outcome, and reconsider your approach where they differ.

Reflection questions
  • Does the compensation I've received match my expectations?
  • Am I spending money on anything just to impress others?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

A lack of recognition can bring disappointment and diminished motivation. Sometimes, exhaustion from excessive effort adds to it.

Possible support

Rest, and recognition of your own efforts even when others don't notice them.

Possible difficulty

An impossibly high standard makes improvement hard to see: anything short of perfect feels inadequate.

Focus

Notice whether seeking approval has pushed care for yourself into the background.

Reflection questions
  • What am I overlooking in my efforts because I'm waiting for a perfect result?
  • Does how I feel about myself depend on praise from others?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

The card invites you to reconsider success through the lens of your own values. A personal achievement can matter without status or public praise.

Possible support

Activities pursued for enjoyment rather than competition, along with honest feedback from trusted friends, can help strengthen self-esteem.

Possible difficulty

Constant comparisons with others and the search for approval erode trust in your own abilities.

Focus

Consider whether this goal still has personal meaning or is mainly about earning others' admiration.

Reflection questions
  • What achievement would matter to me even if no one else ever knew about it?
  • Whose idea of success have I adopted as my own?

Six of Wands — Upright

  1. Situation:

You've been asked to lead a group effort. The opportunity interests you, but you're unsure whether you can handle the responsibility and live up to everyone's trust.

  2. Question:

What can I rely on as I decide whether to take on this role?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help» and getting Six of Wands (upright).

  4. Interpretation:

The Six of Wands connects confident leadership with recognition and support from others. Here, it helps you see that you don't have to treat the offered role as a test you must face alone.

You could talk with the other participants about whose help you can count on. That way, your decision can reflect not only your own capabilities, but also other people's willingness to contribute to the shared effort.

Six of Wands — Reversed

  1. Situation:

You've been asked to lead a group effort. The opportunity interests you, but you're unsure whether you can handle the responsibility and live up to everyone's trust.

  2. Question:

What can I rely on as I decide whether to take on this role?

  3. Card drawn:

  4. Interpretation:

The reversed Six of Wands draws attention to fear of falling short of expectations and readiness to lead. In this situation, it helps to distinguish anxiety about others' opinions from a genuine lack of experience.

Before agreeing, you could discuss getting help from a more experienced participant or suggest that they take the lead. Your decision then won't have to be about proving that you can handle everything yourself.
