Temperance

Descriptions and symbolism are based on the card’s classic illustration in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. Details of the artwork may differ in other editions of the deck.

This guide brings together traditional and modern readings. Interpretations and answers may differ between authors and schools.

Go to meanings
Temperance

The angel of Temperance pours the contents of one cup into another with the concentration of a skilled craftsperson. One hand holds a vessel higher, while the other positions the second beneath the stream. The pouring requires just the right tilt: too sudden a movement would spill what needs to be preserved, while standing completely still would bring the work to a halt.

Waite connected this action with bringing the psychic and material sides of human nature into harmony. One of the angel’s feet touches water and the other rests on earth; both have their place in its steady stance. The cups, too, remain separate even as the stream joins them. Balance is maintained through movement that continues without haste or visible strain.

Core meaning

Temperance brings different elements together into a whole that works. Its themes are moderation, patience, balancing needs, and gradually adjusting what has yet to fall into place.

Image and symbols

Card image

At the center stands a winged angel in a long white robe. Red wings with dark shading spread behind its shoulders, and rays extend around its golden hair. A circle with a dot appears on its forehead, a triangle within a square on its chest, and small markings sit above the square near the neckline.

The angel holds two golden cups: the cup on the viewer’s right is raised higher, while the one on the left is lower. A blue stream flows between them. The foot on the viewer’s left is immersed in a pool, while the other rests on the bank.

Yellow irises with long green leaves grow on the right. On the left, a path winds around green hills toward two mountain peaks. Golden light shines between them, revealing the outline of a crown; the rest of the background is pale grayish violet.

Traditional context

For Waite, the angel brings together and harmonizes the psychic and material aspects of human nature. The pouring of the “essences of life” relates to his idea of eternal life accessible to human beings in earthly form. This esoteric understanding goes beyond everyday advice to practice moderation.

In a separate list of divinatory meanings, Waite gives moderation, frugality, management, and accommodation. For the reversed card, he lists disunion, unfortunate combinations, and competing interests, but also churches, religions, sects, the priesthood, and sometimes a priest officiating at a marriage. These religious associations belong to the historical list; they are not required meanings in every modern reading.

Modern readings place more emphasis on patience, balancing different needs, and combining skills or approaches. Such a combination can create something new rather than merely preserve what is familiar. Beyond extremes and discord, the reversed card can also suggest an inward reassessment of priorities and habits.

There is a more restrained reading as well. The card can describe contentment with the way things are: this can be supportive when the question is about peace, while in a question about change, familiar comfort may suggest a lack of movement.

This context applies to both upright and reversed positions.

Winged angel

Waite describes a figure that is neither male nor female. It embodies the reconciliation of the psychic and material aspects of human life.

Two cups

In the Hermetic interpretation of Case, the cups correspond to the conscious and subconscious aspects of the mind. What matters is their connection, not choosing one over the other.

Liquid flowing between the cups

For Waite, this is a blending of the essences of life. In Case’s interpretation, the flow between the cups connects an inner idea with putting it to the test through action.

One foot in water, the other on land

The stance brings inner emotional life into contact with everyday material reality. The angel remains connected to both.

Triangle within a square on the chest

Case reads this symbol as the spiritual principle manifesting in material form. The triangle’s three sides and the square’s four sides together point to the number seven.

Circle with a dot on the forehead

Waite calls this a solar sign. He connects the card’s solar imagery with spiritual light but does not identify the angel itself with the spirit of the Sun.

Four symbols at the neckline of the robe

Case identifies these as the Tetragrammaton, the four-letter name of God. In his reading, it emphasizes the divine nature of the angelic figure.

Pool at the angel’s feet

In Case’s system, the pool represents universal life, from which individual human existence arises.

Path leading toward mountain peaks

In a Hermetic reading, the path represents spiritual progress, while the height of the mountains suggests its goal. For Case, this is the aspiration toward union with a higher principle.

Crown shining between the mountains

Waite describes a crown barely visible in the brilliant light. Case associates it with Kether, the “Crown” of the Tree of Life, and primordial will.

Irises on the right bank

In esoteric interpretations, the irises refer to Iris, the messenger and goddess of the rainbow. Through this association, the flowers reinforce the theme of communication between the earthly and the divine.

Colors

  • White — the angel’s robe

In modern symbolic readings, the white robe represents purity.

  • Red — the angel’s wings

The red of the wings is associated with blood and life. It brings a note of vitality to the calm composition.

Meanings

Temperance — Upright

General

Overall meaning

Temperance describes a situation in which different elements can be brought into alignment: needs, approaches, pace, and interests. Balance here comes through careful adjustment, not standing still. Sometimes the result is a new combination that none of the separate parts could offer.

The card also relates to patience, self-control, and making thoughtful use of what is available. It speaks to processes in which quality develops gradually and pushing harder in a hurry does little to help.

Possible support

The ability to stay calm and consider several points of view provides support. It helps you look for a shared solution without escalating disagreement.

Possible difficulty

The difficulty may be that different wants and demands cannot yet be reconciled. Finding the right measure then calls for patience rather than another push.

Focus

Consider how your current priorities fit together. What matters is not only the outcome you want, but also a pace that lets you move toward it without constant extremes.

Reflection questions
  • What could I bring together in this situation instead of choosing just one thing?
  • Where would it help me more to maintain my pace than to speed up?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In romantic relationships, Temperance is associated with patience, reciprocity, and the ability to work through differences. Closeness develops without constant pressure or testing whether the other person meets every expectation.

In family life, it may involve reconciling different habits and perspectives, including when two families come together. In friendship, the card emphasizes calm communication, respect, and the ability not only to speak but also to listen.

Possible support

A willingness to find a way of relating that works for both people offers support. In families and friendships, a calm person who helps everyone talk without pressuring one another may play that role.

Possible difficulty

In romance, the imbalance can go either way: too much pressure or too much restraint, giving too much or barely participating at all.

Focus

Notice whether close relationships leave room for different habits and opinions. In romantic relationships, it may help to look separately at the balance of initiative, compromise, and mutual participation.

Reflection questions
  • Where in our conversations should I listen more, and where should I speak more clearly?
  • Which differences with someone close to me can I make room for in an agreement?

Work and study

Overall meaning

At work, this card relates to steady progress and quality that takes time. Collaboration and bringing different skills together may be more useful than competing to prove that one approach is the only right one.

Temperance also invites you to consider how career goals fit with the rest of your life. When thinking about changing jobs, its theme is patience and thoughtful development, not a promise of immediate results.

Possible support

Steady work and the ability to remain composed under pressure offer support. In shared projects, it helps to combine everyone’s strengths.

Possible difficulty

Difficulty arises when work demands cannot be reconciled with other responsibilities and time outside work.

Focus

Consider whether you judge work solely by outward advancement or pay. This card also values quality, satisfaction in what you do, and the place work holds in your life.

Reflection questions
  • Which of my skills could complement the skills of others?
  • At what pace can I do this work well?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

In money matters, Temperance relates to saving steadily and managing expenses thoughtfully. Stability builds gradually. At the same time, sensible thrift leaves room for affordable pleasures rather than treating every purchase as forbidden.

Possible support

A habit of saving regularly and keeping expenses in proportion can be a source of support. Its strength lies in consistency, not a sudden financial leap.

Focus

Consider whether your savings goals can coexist with reasonable everyday spending. Thinking about the future does not mean giving up every pleasure now.

Reflection questions
  • What spending and saving habits can I sustain regularly?
  • Do my financial plans leave room for pleasures I can afford?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

Temperance draws attention to the balance between exertion and recovery. Even when things seem calm on the surface, it can point to a need for rest and greater attention to how you feel.

Caring for others should not quietly displace everyday care for yourself. Here, it matters to notice fatigue before constant busyness becomes the only rhythm you know.

Possible support

Rest, quiet time without new demands, and activities that leave you feeling restored can provide support.

Possible difficulty

Trying not to disappoint anyone can lead to taking on too much. Other people’s needs then take all your attention while your own rest is continually postponed.

Focus

Notice whether you have enough time to rest and meet your own everyday needs. Being constantly busy does not, by itself, mean the workload is manageable.

Reflection questions
  • Is there time in my day to rest without taking on new obligations?
  • Am I putting off rest because I do not want to disappoint anyone?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

This card relates to integrating experience: understanding something about yourself is not enough unless you can make room for it in everyday life. Different insights and parts of your personality do not necessarily have to displace one another.

Temperance also draws attention to alignment between your goals and habitual actions. Inner growth shows in how you live, not only in the strength of your intentions.

Possible support

Taking a calm look at your priorities can provide support. It helps bring everyday actions into alignment with your inner direction rather than simply acting out of habit.

Possible difficulty

Limiting beliefs about yourself can make it harder to treat yourself with respect and allow for change.

Focus

Consider which important insights have already become habits and which remain only thoughts. It is especially revealing to ask whether daily actions support your chosen goals.

Reflection questions
  • What have I learned about myself that I want to put into practice in everyday life?
  • Which habit already supports a goal that matters to me?

Temperance — Reversed

General

Overall meaning

Reversed Temperance may describe an imbalance: one part of a situation receives too much attention and another too little. This can lead to haste, swings between extremes, discord, and unsuccessful attempts to reconcile conflicting interests.

Another interpretation involves inner realignment. A familiar way of life may no longer fit what matters to you now. In that case, the card describes reconsidering priorities and habits, not only losing your balance.

There is also the risk of overcorrecting, replacing one imbalance with another extreme instead of finding the right measure.

Possible support

When your own efforts are not enough, another person’s help may provide support. The reversed card makes room for acknowledging that need instead of trying to manage alone.

Possible difficulty

Extreme reactions and impatience stand in the way of finding common ground. Trying to get everything at once or refusing to yield on anything can deepen existing discord.

Focus

Notice exactly which imbalance needs to change. Too little structure and excessive control are different problems: the first calls for more organization, the second for greater flexibility.

Reflection questions
  • What am I giving too much attention to, and what am I neglecting?
  • Do I need more structure right now, or more freedom to move beyond rigid rules?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In romance, this card may point to unequal give-and-take, difficulty compromising, and impatience. An all-or-nothing approach can sometimes get in the way: wanting certainty immediately or expecting a perfect match.

In families, discord may come from sharp reactions and too little communication. In friendships, support and participation may be unevenly shared.

Possible support

Returning to an open conversation about differences and mutual needs can help in a romantic partnership. In families and friendships, clear boundaries and a discussion of behavior that makes communication difficult may provide support.

Possible difficulty

Pressure and attempts to rush intimacy can increase tension. In an established relationship, the difficulty grows when one person consistently gives more and differences remain undiscussed.

Focus

In romance, examine your expectations: is there room for differences, or does every mismatch become a reason to reject the relationship? In families and friendships, notice unequal participation and recurring misunderstandings.

Reflection questions
  • Am I demanding immediate certainty from this relationship?
  • How do I contribute to our communication, and what support do I receive in return?

Work and study

Overall meaning

At work, reversed Temperance points to an imbalance in effort. This may mean overworking until the rest of life is pushed aside, or contributing too little and shifting the burden onto colleagues.

Another theme is haste: rushing to finish undermines quality, while impulsive decisions complicate professional progress. The problem is not always how much work there is; sometimes the way it is organized needs to change.

Possible support

Reconsidering how effort is distributed while keeping quality in view can help. When teamwork has fallen out of balance, it may be useful to clarify participation and responsibilities again.

Possible difficulty

A fast pace can conceal a loss of quality, while an extreme focus on work can leave other responsibilities unattended. The opposite imbalance, disengaging from tasks, also makes collaboration harder.

Focus

Consider where the imbalance lies: in workload, participation, or quality. Frustration with your progress does not, by itself, make a drastic work decision the right one.

Reflection questions
  • Am I trying to solve work difficulties simply by putting in more hours?
  • Am I rushing to finish at the expense of quality?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

Reversed Temperance can point to two financial extremes: impulsive spending and excessive saving that leaves no room for present needs or enjoyment. Both reflect a lack of lasting balance between today’s expenses and planning for the future.

Possible support

Reconsidering extreme money habits can offer support. A more balanced approach makes room for both current needs and future obligations, without letting either crowd out the other.

Possible difficulty

Spending for immediate enjoyment can crowd out care for the future. The opposite extreme, giving up every affordable pleasure, also fails to create a lasting balance between needs.

Focus

Consider which part of your financial plans is being overlooked: what you need now or what you will need later. The card invites you to examine your usual patterns of spending and saving, not a single incidental purchase.

Reflection questions
  • Am I going to extremes with saving or spending?
  • What present or future expenses am I overlooking?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

Reversed Temperance may describe exhaustion and too little time to recover. Work, worry, or other people’s needs can occupy so much attention that other parts of life go uncared for.

In this reading, the card draws attention to what has long been set aside: rest, quiet time for yourself, and the possibility of no longer trying to hold everything together at once.

Possible support

Making room again for rest and simple restorative activities offers support. It helps to spread your attention so that the most demanding part of life does not consume everything else.

Possible difficulty

Constant worry and a habit of placing others’ needs ahead of your own can be draining. More effort does not always resolve an overload that the effort itself helps sustain.

Focus

Notice what is taking a disproportionate share of your attention and when you postpone rest because of it.

Reflection questions
  • What is taking almost all my attention right now?
  • What ordinary act of self-care do I keep putting off?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

Your inner priorities may change before your familiar routines do. Reversed Temperance can then point to a need to reconsider habits, goals, or how you live so that your outward actions once again reflect what truly matters.

Such a change does not have to mean returning to the way things were. The card leaves room for finding a different balance, moving away from constantly seeking approval, and being more accepting of your own unfinished growth.

Sometimes an old cycle continues because a familiar reaction keeps repeating. In that case, the pattern itself needs to be interrupted, not merely expressed a little less often.

Possible support

A willingness to reassess your priorities with honesty becomes a source of support. When habits no longer fit new needs, you can treat that mismatch as an opening for intentional change without demanding immediate completion of yourself.

Possible difficulty

Everyday actions may continue to serve old goals or other people’s approval. Efforts then accumulate without bringing you closer to a direction that matters inwardly.

Focus

Consider which habits still reflect your current priorities and which persist only through inertia. It helps to distinguish your own direction from the desire for outside validation.

Reflection questions
  • Which habit no longer fits how I want to live?
  • What do I keep doing mainly to gain approval?

Roles in a spread

Position examples

A position gives the card a question, such as what helps or what gets in the way. That question shapes how you read its meaning.

Temperance — Upright

Situation

Different parts of the situation are gradually coming into alignment: approaches, interests, or ways of acting are beginning to work together.

Influence

Someone who can mediate and help each side hear the other may be bringing calm to the situation.

Motivation

A clear long-term goal may sustain your progress. What matters is an outcome worth pursuing patiently, without changing course at every fluctuation.

Support

Calmness and the ability to consider both sides help you find common ground, even when opinions differ.

Obstacle

The obstacle may be difficulty reconciling competing desires. The right balance has yet to be found, even though each demand makes sense on its own.

Focus of attention

The balance between priorities deserves attention. Notice which aspects of the situation need to be brought into alignment before pushing one of them further.

Next step

Bring compatible approaches together and choose a measured pace. When others are involved, consider collaboration instead of intensifying competition.

Possible development

Continued, patient efforts to find common ground may lead to a more stable way of life, where differences are less of an obstacle to moving forward together.

Temperance — Reversed

Situation

The parts of the situation are out of step in proportion or pace. Giving too much attention to one leaves another neglected and disrupts the overall flow.

Influence

Other people’s extreme reactions or habits may be adding to the discord. In this position, the card draws attention to how the behavior of those around you affects the overall rhythm.

Motivation

A sense that your current way of life no longer reflects your inner priorities may be driving change. The desire to readjust your life matters more here than maintaining an appearance of calm.

Support

Asking for help at the right time can be a source of support when trying to manage everything alone no longer works.

Obstacle

Haste, excessive reactions, and an unwillingness to compromise can prolong the discord you want to resolve.

Focus of attention

A growing sense that something is out of alignment deserves attention. Consider how your everyday activities relate to what truly matters to you.

Next step

First, distinguish a lack of structure from excessive rigidity. If structure is missing, organize your actions; if control is too tight, allow more flexibility. If endless hesitation is the problem, move toward a considered decision.

Possible development

If extremes and misalignment continue, the situation may keep swinging between tension and attempts to soothe it. A change of approach is needed, not simply more of the same.

Combination examples

Card combinations are in development. For now, here are a few examples.

Temperance + The World

Temperance ( upright) + The World ( upright)

Example question:
How can the different parts of this experience come together as a whole?
Example interpretation:

These cards reinforce the theme of integration: Temperance brings differences into harmony, while The World supports a reading of wholeness and synthesis.

Temperance + Two of Cups

Temperance ( upright) + Two of Cups ( upright)

Example question:
What supports working together?
Example interpretation:

This combination emphasizes connection and the willingness to act together. Temperance’s reconciling quality meets the mutual connection of the Two of Cups.

Temperance + Three of Pentacles

Temperance ( upright) + Three of Pentacles ( upright)

Example question:
How do the contributions of those working together fit together?
Example interpretation:

The pairing emphasizes teamwork and bringing different contributions together. Temperance and the Three of Pentacles reinforce the theme of coordinated collaboration.

Temperance + Five of Wands

Temperance ( upright) + Five of Wands ( upright)

Example question:
What shapes the way we interact?
Example interpretation:

Here, harmony and rivalry come into conflict. Temperance represents the search for balance, while the Five of Wands highlights the disagreement and competition that stand in its way.

Temperance + The Tower

Temperance ( upright) + The Tower ( upright)

Example question:
What opposing tendencies stand out in this situation?
Example interpretation:

This pairing contrasts integration with disintegration. Temperance’s calm adjustments stand opposite the extremes and sudden separation associated with The Tower.

Reading example

An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.

Temperance — Upright

  1. Situation:

You and someone close to you are discussing moving together. The prospect is appealing, but finding agreement is difficult: one person wants to decide sooner, while the other needs more time.

  2. Question:

How should I approach this disagreement?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «Approaching a disagreement» and getting Temperance (upright).

  4. Interpretation:

Temperance suggests finding a pace that works for both of you rather than pressing for a decision. Here, it draws attention to the possibility of finding an option that takes both people’s needs into account.

You could discuss what each of you needs to understand before deciding on the move. The conversation can then shift from who is rushing whom to how you can move forward together.

Temperance — Reversed

  1. Situation:

You and someone close to you are discussing moving together. The prospect is appealing, but finding agreement is difficult: one person wants to decide sooner, while the other needs more time.

  2. Question:

How should I approach this disagreement?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «Approaching a disagreement» and getting Temperance (reversed).

  4. Interpretation:

Reversed Temperance draws attention to extremes in the discussion. A difference in pace can become more difficult if the choice is reduced to “decide now or give up the idea entirely.”

In this reading, it helps to examine your own demands: what do you truly need in order to decide, and what comes from wanting the uncertainty to end immediately? This opens space to discuss expectations without requiring the other person to share them right away.

Yes / No

Temperance — Upright

Why this answer

Yes. Temperance connects a positive answer with patience, coordination, and a measured approach to what you want. It offers a useful perspective on acting or making progress without pressure or extremes.

A clarification

Do not force the outcome: this answer points to patient progress and proportionate effort, rather than expecting everything at once.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

Am I expecting results faster than the situation itself allows?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.

Temperance — Reversed

Why this answer

No. Reversed Temperance connects a negative answer with extremes and inconsistency: the chosen approach is not yet providing a steady direction. For a major decision, this is a reason not to rush while things are swinging sharply.

A clarification

Pay particular attention to sudden changes in a decision or how you feel about it. If today’s and tomorrow’s choices are driven by opposing impulses, it may help to pause before taking a major step.

Apply this clarification to your question. It describes what the answer depends on or what deserves attention when acting on it.

A question to consider

Does my decision stay the same after a strong emotion has passed?

Use this question to explore the clarification above in your own situation.

Correspondences

Connections with numbers, elements and other symbols add depth to the card’s imagery. They can differ between traditions.

Number — XIV (14)

Case interprets fourteen as combining the meanings of The Magician, one, and The Emperor, four. Adding 1 + 4 links the result to The Hierophant. In another of his readings, 7 × 2 expresses the power of The Chariot acting through duality; the card’s two cups reinforce this duality.

Tradition: Numerological interpretation by Paul Foster Case

Element — Fire

Fire is associated here with Sagittarius and the spiritual principle finding expression in earthly life. The water depicted in the image does not make Water the card’s elemental correspondence.

Tradition: Hermetic correspondence through Sagittarius

Astrology — Sagittarius

The correspondence with Sagittarius connects the card to direction, the pursuit of broader understanding, and bringing experience together into a meaningful whole.

Tradition: Golden Dawn

Letter — ס — Samekh

Case renders the letter’s name as “prop.” Here, the emphasis is on support and reinforcement: inner understanding becomes something to lean on when it withstands the test of action.

Tradition: Golden Dawn; interpretation by Paul Foster Case

Tree of Life — 25th Path: Tiphareth — Yesod

In Case’s reading, the link between Tiphareth and Yesod concerns testing inner understanding through experience. He calls it the “Intelligence of Probation”: an idea must take shape in life rather than remain merely an inner conviction.

Tradition: Hermetic Qabalah of the Golden Dawn
