Eight of Swords

Descriptions and symbolism are based on the card’s classic illustration in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. Details of the artwork may differ in other editions of the deck.

This guide brings together traditional and modern readings. Interpretations and answers may differ between authors and schools.

Eight of Swords

A bound woman stands among swords, unable to see the space around her. To the viewer, gaps remain between the blades; to her, they may feel like one unbroken barrier. The blindfold prevents her from calmly checking her next step, and the bindings make even a small movement difficult. The distant building offers no immediate support.

Waite calls this a state of temporary restriction. But the woman cannot see its limits as we can. The gap between the swords has yet to become a path for her: first she needs to learn what lies near her feet and where she can shift her weight. What looks open to the viewer remains unknown to the person who must step into it.

Core meaning

Restrictions and the feeling that there is no way out. The Eight of Swords draws attention both to outside pressures and to the thoughts that narrow your choices even further.

Image and symbols

Card image

A woman stands blindfolded, her hands bound. She wears a long red dress, and eight swords stand around her.

Water is visible at her feet, with bare ground nearby. A castle stands in the background beneath a gray sky.

Traditional context

For Waite, the central image represents temporary restriction, not permanent captivity. His list of divinatory meanings includes bad news, deep distress, crisis, censure, limited power, conflict, and slander; illness is also mentioned separately. This is a broader, more event-focused set of meanings than the modern interpretation centered solely on internal prohibitions.

The reversed card is also unfavorable in Waite's account: anxiety, difficulties, opposition, an accident, treachery, and unforeseen fatal misfortune. In a supplementary list, he mentions gossip about a woman for the upright card and a relative's departure for the reversed card. Waite himself notes that such additions have little connection to the illustrations and often diverge from the primary meanings.

In the Golden Dawn system, the card is called Lord of Shortened Force. The key idea here is effort spent on minor matters at the expense of what matters most. In the Thoth Tarot, the title 'Interference' emphasizes obstacles that divert the will from its chosen course; this tradition should not be conflated with Smith's illustrated scene.

Modern psychological readings foreground fear, doubt, and the belief 'I have no choice.' A reversal can signify release and a broader perspective, but also an intensification of inner criticism. These are distinct readings: restrictions loosening, or their internal influence growing deeper.

This context applies to both upright and reversed positions.

A solitary, bound figure

An image of helplessness and distance from familiar sources of safety. The figure cannot see where to turn or how to move forward.

Bindings around the body

Limited freedom to act. Waite emphasizes that this restriction is temporary; in a psychological reading, the bindings can also represent internal prohibitions.

Blindfold

A narrowed view of the situation: available options go unnoticed, while one's perception of the obstacles seems to be the whole picture.

Eight swords surrounding the woman

Thoughts and fears take the shape of a barrier. In modern readings, the swords show how doubt can restrict action.

Water at her feet

A connection to feelings and what has yet to be put into words. Intuitive understanding can remain even when reasoning reaches a dead end.

Castle in the background

Protection and familiar security from which the figure is separated. Its solidity contrasts with her constrained position.

Bare ground

In modern symbolic readings, it emphasizes a lack of creative ways forward: a new solution is difficult to see.

Colors

  • Red — dress

Desire, passion, and an inner urge that struggles to find expression in a restrictive situation.

  • Gray — sky

Emphasizes the discouragement and sense of hopelessness that accompany a limited view of the situation.

Meanings

Eight of Swords — Upright

General

Overall meaning

The Eight of Swords describes a restrictive situation: there are few options, or they are hard to see. Resistance, judgment, and pressure from circumstances may all play a part.

In modern readings, outside restrictions are joined by fear of making a mistake and the belief that nothing can change. As a result, even available possibilities remain out of sight.

Possible support

Options already within reach and support from other people may help. Both often go unnoticed when all attention is fixed on obstacles.

Possible difficulty

Fear of the consequences can paralyze a decision: staying seems bad, but any change looks dangerous too.

Focus

Consider whether a feeling of helplessness has been mistaken for a complete account of the circumstances, especially where the conclusion 'there is no way out' came before any exploration of options.

Reflection questions
  • What options am I ruling out because I am afraid of making a mistake?
  • Where am I genuinely constrained by circumstances, and where have I simply not found a way forward yet?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In a romantic relationship, the card can reflect a lack of freedom, difficulty speaking openly, and a sense that the relationship cannot change.

In friendships and family relationships, restrictions may involve control, overprotectiveness, or fear of judgment. This is not necessarily just about your own fears: the behavior of people close to you can also narrow your choices.

When looking for a relationship, you may expect that finding a partner will resolve your difficulties on its own. That expectation can hold back your own initiative.

Possible support

When talking with a partner, it helps to express your boundaries clearly: what works for you in the relationship and what has become restrictive.

Possible difficulty

Fear of criticism or conflict can leave you constantly choosing your words and keeping important things unsaid, even around friends and family.

Focus

Look at whose demands are shaping the situation: agreements within the relationship, or interference and opinions from other people.

Reflection questions
  • What is difficult for me to say in this relationship?
  • Which expectations from others influence my choices in relationships?

Work and study

Overall meaning

Work may feel like a dead end: your responsibilities are unsatisfying, opportunities for growth seem out of reach, and you may feel underqualified to make a change.

Sometimes there are very real constraints, such as dependence on your current income or being unable to study without earning money. These need to be distinguished from the assumption that no other jobs are available.

Possible support

Advice from a mentor and support while learning a new job may help. They can make it easier to explore career options without facing doubts about your skills alone.

Possible difficulty

When managers or coworkers do not support initiative, the feeling that there is no room to grow here can become stronger.

Focus

Consider what you can still discuss at your current workplace: professional goals, opportunities for growth, and the conditions that leave you feeling stuck.

Reflection questions
  • What opportunities could I discuss at my current job?
  • What kind of help do I need as I learn a new job?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

The card can reflect a sense of financial restriction. Not knowing what options are available can deepen the impression that your financial situation cannot change.

Possible support

Information that reveals previously unknown ways to address a financial difficulty can offer support.

Possible difficulty

Anxiety can obscure the picture of income and expenses, making even a look at your account balance uncomfortable.

Focus

Consider how much of your sense of restriction comes from known circumstances, and how much from missing information or assumptions.

Reflection question

What information am I missing that would help me understand my financial options?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

The card can represent feeling emotionally constrained and exhausted. You may feel alone with your experiences and unsure what you can rely on.

Possible support

Talking with someone who can offer support and a different perspective can help you feel less alone with anxious thoughts.

Possible difficulty

Worry may hold you back from actions that help you care for yourself and seek support.

Focus

Notice which phrases in your inner dialogue intensify fear and make it harder to seek support.

Reflection questions
  • What thought is especially exhausting for me right now?
  • Who would I feel more comfortable talking to about how I am doing?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

Limiting beliefs can become familiar ways of describing yourself: 'I don't know how,' 'I can't handle it,' or 'I'm not allowed to.' Your self-image then narrows what you are willing to try before you even begin.

Possible support

It helps to recognize your abilities and your right to choose, even when you do not yet feel confident.

Possible difficulty

Fixating on the worst-case scenario can reinforce a decision not to try before you have any firsthand experience.

Focus

Consider beliefs that once seemed useful but now only hold you back from change.

Reflection question

What belief about myself keeps me from trying something new?

Eight of Swords — Reversed

General

Overall meaning

The reversed Eight of Swords often represents release: a different perspective emerges, restrictive ties loosen, or the ability to act returns.

Another reading points to a deepening sense of inner restriction. Doubt and harsh self-criticism make it difficult to take advantage of available choices.

Possible support

Experience of moving through a similar difficulty can provide support: what helped you recognize more than one possible solution back then?

Possible difficulty

Fear of the unknown can keep you within familiar but confining boundaries. The desire for freedom then never turns into action.

Focus

Notice what has become clearer and which restrictions can now be eased. New clarity matters not only in itself, but because it creates an opportunity to approach an old impasse differently.

Reflection questions
  • Which option can I see more clearly now?
  • Which old restriction am I still finding hard to let go of?

Relationships

Overall meaning

In a romantic relationship, the card can suggest a clearer view of the connection and an easing of the fear that once made it hard to speak or choose.

In friendships and family relationships, this may mean moving beyond constant criticism and others' expectations. A supportive environment helps restore independence, though the desire for change may still coexist with a fear of conflict.

In a new relationship, the reversal can indicate a greater willingness to take part in its development rather than staying on the sidelines because of earlier fears.

Possible support

Support from people around whom you can express your needs without constant judgment can help.

Possible difficulty

Old internal prohibitions may still hold a relationship back, even as some restrictions begin to ease. In this reading, the obstacle is the lingering sense of 'I'm not allowed to,' rather than a new barrier.

Focus

Pay attention to the possibility of speaking more clearly, not just to the desire to avoid an argument. With friends and family, fear of disagreement can keep you from expressing a need you already understand.

Reflection questions
  • What can I now say more clearly about my needs?
  • Which old restriction continues to affect this relationship?

Work and study

Overall meaning

Reversed, the card can suggest a return of professional independence: other ways of working and growing begin to come into view.

But the opposite reading is also possible. If no alternatives are considered, dissatisfaction with work may feel even stronger, while the thought 'this is my only path' becomes more rigid.

Possible support

A mentor or coworkers who help you see career possibilities beyond familiar limitations can offer support.

Possible difficulty

Believing that nothing can be changed keeps you from even exploring alternatives and deepens dissatisfaction with your current job.

Focus

Take another look at opportunities you previously dismissed out of hand. In this reading, the emphasis is on reconsidering your career choices, not on having to quit immediately.

Reflection questions
  • Which career opportunities can I see more clearly now?
  • Who can I turn to for professional support?

Money and resources

Overall meaning

Financial choices may be becoming clearer: the sense of helplessness eases, and previously overlooked options come into view.

Another reading points to growing anxiety about money. A reversal therefore does not necessarily mean material relief.

Possible support

Taking a more active, thoughtful role in financial decisions can help, rather than feeling that everything is being decided without you.

Possible difficulty

If fear of losing money intensifies, it may once again obscure available options and make decisions harder.

Focus

When considering different jobs, weigh new career opportunities against your financial needs.

Reflection questions
  • Which financial decisions make more sense to me now?
  • What do I need to consider about my income if I change jobs?

Wellbeing and self-care

Overall meaning

The card can reflect emotional relief: fear eases, and a greater sense of clarity and confidence emerges. Familiar anxious reactions no longer seem like the only possible response.

Possible support

A willingness to ask for the support you need can help, instead of relying on the familiar belief that you must face everything alone.

Focus

Notice which habitual reactions are softening and where it already feels easier to find another way to cope.

Reflection question

What causes me less tension now?

Personal growth

Overall meaning

The reversed card can suggest freedom from old beliefs about yourself and a greater readiness to accept change.

Another reading involves rigid beliefs: a person defends a familiar point of view even when it gets in the way of growing and maturing.

Possible support

Reflecting on past experiences can help you understand where your limitations came from and stop treating them as unchangeable parts of your personality.

Possible difficulty

Your inner critic may stop every attempt with the words 'wrong' or 'not good enough.'

Focus

Look at beliefs about yourself that you maintain out of habit. Growth calls for a willingness to reconsider them, not just find new ways to justify them.

Reflection questions
  • Which old belief about myself can I reconsider?
  • What am I holding back from trying because I think it won't be 'good enough'?

Roles in a spread

Position examples

A position gives the card a question, such as what helps or what gets in the way. That question shapes how you read its meaning.

Eight of Swords — Upright

Situation

Progress has stalled, and a way out of the difficulty is not yet visible. A sense of isolation makes the situation feel even more restrictive.

Influence

Criticism, pressure, or overprotectiveness from others may be affecting the situation. These influences make it harder to choose for yourself.

Motivation

The desire to break free of restrictions may be a driving force. It is held back by the fear of being unable to change anything.

Support

In a position of support, the card can point to intuitive understanding that gets lost beneath endless analysis of the problem.

Obstacle

The belief that you are helpless narrows your choices. The obstacle is not only the difficulty of the situation, but also a refusal to consider available options.

Focus of attention

Notice where real circumstances end and self-imposed restrictions on trying begin.

Next step

When you cannot see how to act, it can help to pause and take stock. There is no need to immediately redouble efforts that only reinforce the feeling of being stuck.

Possible development

If fear persists and choices continue to be avoided, the feeling of being trapped may become more entrenched. A change in perspective remains an important part of moving beyond this pattern.

Eight of Swords — Reversed

Situation

The earlier sense of restriction is easing: a way out is becoming visible, or an opportunity to break free of a limiting connection is emerging.

Influence

Outside pressure may be easing. Help from a mentor or another supportive person can bring previously overlooked possibilities into view.

Motivation

The wish to regain independence may coexist with a fear of change. You want to break free, but it can be hard to know what will take the place of familiar restrictions.

Support

A willingness to accept yourself and change how you usually look at a difficulty can become a source of support.

Obstacle

Clinging to what is familiar can slow the process of breaking free. Even narrow confines can sometimes feel safer than the unknown beyond them.

Focus of attention

New clarity can help you see more precisely what keeps you in the old situation and what you can now let go of.

Next step

Consider which restriction it is time to release. This could mean leaving a constraining situation or reconnecting with others after a period of isolation.

Possible development

If renewed clarity makes it possible to act differently, old restrictions may gradually loosen, leaving more room for independent choices.

Combination examples

Card combinations are in development. For now, here are a few examples.

Eight of Swords + The Magician

Eight of Swords ( upright) + The Magician ( upright)

Example question:
What stands in contrast to the feeling of powerlessness in this situation?
Example interpretation:

The Magician counters the helplessness of the Eight of Swords with a sense of personal power and understanding of what is happening. The pair highlights the contrast between being constrained and being able to act.

Eight of Swords + The Devil

Eight of Swords ( upright) + The Devil ( upright)

Example question:
How does a lack of freedom appear in the situation being considered?
Example interpretation:

Both cards amplify the themes of restriction and entanglement. The combination draws attention to the limitations without, in itself, identifying who created them.

Eight of Swords + The Moon

Eight of Swords ( upright) + The Moon ( upright)

Example question:
What is making it difficult to see the situation clearly?
Example interpretation:

The Moon deepens the uncertainty of the Eight of Swords: it is hard to understand what is happening or see a possible direction. The shared emphasis of the pair is a lack of clarity.

Reading example

An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.

Eight of Swords — Upright

  1. Situation:

You are thinking about changing jobs. Your current workplace is not a good fit, but you keep putting off the search because you worry you will struggle in a new role.

  2. Question:

What will help me make sense of this choice?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help» and getting Eight of Swords (upright).

  4. Interpretation:

The Eight of Swords draws attention to fear that narrows your choices before you even start looking. Here, the broad thought 'I won't be able to handle it' may obscure the difference between actual job requirements and self-doubt.

You could look into the skills needed in a field that interests you and what you would genuinely need to learn. That would give your decision a more concrete basis than the expectation of failure.

Eight of Swords — Reversed

  1. Situation:

You are thinking about changing jobs. Your current workplace is not a good fit, but you keep putting off the search because you worry you will struggle in a new role.

  2. Question:

What will help me make sense of this choice?

  3. Card drawn:

Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help» and getting Eight of Swords (reversed).

  4. Interpretation:

In this reading, the reversed Eight of Swords highlights the possibility of moving beyond the familiar thought 'I can't handle it'. You can look at the choice more broadly: rather than only staying or quitting right away, you could first explore other directions.

You might revisit an option you previously dismissed without looking into it and learn more. Beginning the search does not yet commit you to leaving.
