Two of Swords
Descriptions and symbolism are based on the card’s classic illustration in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. Details of the artwork may differ in other editions of the deck.
This guide brings together traditional and modern readings. Interpretations and answers may differ between authors and schools.
A woman sits by the shore, so still that even the slightest movement seems as though it might disturb the balance she has achieved. Her arms are crossed over her chest, and two long swords are raised in opposite directions. No opponent stands before her, yet she must keep both blades lifted.
Waite associated the Two of Swords with an agreement in which the weapons have not yet been laid down. In this reading, the woman seems to be guarding a truce: there is no confrontation, but the readiness to defend remains. Peace is maintained through effort.
Behind her lies the sea, with rocks rising from the water. A blindfold covers her eyes, leaving all of this outside her view. To remove it, she would have to free one hand—and, for at least a moment, break the symmetry of the raised swords.

Image and symbols
Card image
A woman sits facing the viewer on a rectangular stone bench. She wears a long white garment with gray folds, and yellow shoes are visible beneath its hem. A white blindfold covers her eyes. Her arms are crossed over her chest, with a sword in each hand. The blades point upward in opposite directions.
Behind the figure is a sea dotted with rocky islets rising from the water. A shoreline stretches across the distance. A yellow crescent moon appears in the upper-right corner of the blue sky, and the Roman numeral II is positioned above the figure.
Traditional context
For Waite, the Two of Swords signifies harmony and balance, courage, friendship, and agreement alongside a continued readiness to defend oneself. He also includes tenderness, affection, and intimacy, but qualifies the favorable interpretation: the suit of Swords prevents this harmony from being considered unconditional. His meanings for the reversed card are different: pretense, falsehood, duplicity, and disloyalty.
In his supplementary list, Waite mentions gifts to a woman and influential patronage for a man seeking assistance; for the reversed card, he notes dealings with rogues. Waite himself cautions that these additional meanings are loosely connected to the images and sometimes differ from his main list.
In the Golden Dawn system, the card is called the “Lord of Peace Restored.” This refers to reconciliation after a quarrel, with some tension still remaining. It belongs to a separate occult system of correspondences, not to the title printed on Smith's card.
Modern RWS interpretations place greater emphasis on a difficult choice and a sustained pause. Some readings highlight avoidance of the truth, while others allow for beneficial solitude and a calm weighing of options. The reversed orientation may intensify confusion or represent the end of avoidance and a way out of the impasse.
Blindfold
Incomplete knowledge or an unwillingness to see something uncomfortable. Another interpretation is a temporary retreat from other people's opinions to hear your own inner voice.
Two raised swords pointing in opposite directions
Opposing arguments are held in balance. This may be a truce: the conflict has been suspended, but the weapons have not yet been laid down.
Arms crossed over the chest
A protective barrier around feelings. Restraint can help someone avoid opening up too quickly, but it can also hinder intimacy and the acknowledgment of their own emotions.
Stone bench
The rigid support emphasizes stillness. In modern interpretations, it represents a place to pause, but not a state meant to last forever.
Sea behind the figure
Feelings and inner experiences remain behind what the rational mind is considering. They are part of the situation, even if they have not yet been taken into account.
Rocky islets in the water
Complications and obstacles that are easy to overlook. Understanding the full choice means considering the uncomfortable parts of the situation as well.
Crescent moon in the sky
The crescent moon can symbolize intuition, which becomes important when reasoning alone is not enough. Another modern interpretation connects it with illusions and misleading perceptions that make choosing more difficult.
Motionless seated figure with a straight back
Outward composure does not necessarily mean ease or peace. Holding yourself between opposing demands takes effort, too.
Colors
- White clothing
The white clothing may emphasize neutrality and a reluctance to take either side.
Meanings
Two of Swords — Upright
General
Overall meaning
Two positions are held in balance, and movement is suspended. This may represent a difficult choice, the need to compare equally compelling options, or a truce in which disagreements remain unresolved.
A pause can be useful when information is missing and there is a need to consider things calmly. But if the decision is postponed to avoid facing something uncomfortable, balance turns into a deadlock.
Possible support
The ability to sit with uncertainty and consider both sides without choosing based on a first impression.
Possible difficulty
Avoiding facts or feelings that would disrupt a comfortable balance and demand a response.
Focus
The difference between circumstances that are genuinely unknown and things you already know but are reluctant to consider.
Reflection questions
- Which options am I finding difficult to compare?
- What information do I actually need to make a choice?
Relationships
Overall meaning
In traditional interpretations, the card can suggest friendship, affection, and closeness alongside continued caution. Agreement does not necessarily mean that every disagreement has disappeared.
In romantic relationships, modern interpretations more often point to an unspoken issue, a pause after an argument, or difficulty choosing between closeness and distance. Emotional defenses may protect against another painful conversation while also limiting intimacy.
Another possible theme is choosing between two potential partners or between love and other commitments. In that case, the difficulty comes from competing attachments and priorities.
Possible support
A willingness to talk about feelings rather than only defend your side of an argument.
Possible difficulty
An outward calm that leaves an important issue untouched, allowing it to resurface in later arguments.
Focus
A subject that remains unspoken between partners, and doubts that make it difficult to decide how close to become.
Reflection questions
- What am I still hesitant to talk about?
- Am I holding back a desire to become closer?
Work and study
Overall meaning
A crossroads at work: choosing between offers, career paths, or the positions of people involved in a dispute. Within a team, the card may describe a negotiating impasse and a reluctance to take sides because of divided loyalties.
The delay may also come from waiting for someone else's decision. In that case, a lack of movement does not necessarily reflect your own indecision.
Possible support
Temporary neutrality during a conflict. If the decision rests with someone else, patience can be a source of support without trying to pressure them into a hasty answer.
Possible difficulty
Pressure to take sides in a dispute where the participants are unwilling to consider each other's views.
Focus
Details of the options that are still missing from the comparison: the available time can be used to clarify them.
Reflection questions
- What employment terms do I still need to clarify?
- Is someone else's conflict pushing me to choose before I'm ready?
Money and resources
Overall meaning
A financial question remains unresolved: it is difficult to choose between expenses or face the actual state of the budget. Sometimes this means acknowledging that you cannot afford both things you want at the same time.
Possible support
A clear picture of the money available and the expenses involved, rather than putting off the calculations.
Possible difficulty
Reluctance to look at bills and figures because doing so would mean limiting one of the options.
Focus
Whether the planned expenses are affordable: the comparison needs to account for the actual amounts.
Reflection questions
- Do I know how much I can afford to spend?
- Which expenses am I trying to keep at the same time?
Wellbeing and self-care
Overall meaning
A calm outward manner may conceal tension around an unresolved question. The card also allows for a more peaceful experience of uncertainty: not everything needs to be settled immediately.
Possible support
Time alone and a boundary around interactions or situations that leave you drained.
Possible difficulty
Trying to keep feelings under control while an inner argument continues.
Focus
How waiting for an answer affects your emotional state: uncertainty does not always require immediate action.
Reflection questions
- How do I feel while this question remains open?
- Which interactions do I need a break from right now?
Personal growth
Overall meaning
In Elliot Adam's interpretation, this is an intermediate stage in which nothing has been fully settled. Its meaning centers on patience and self-trust: not knowing the answer immediately is not the same as being unable to choose.
Possible support
Patience with your own doubts, without rushing into a decision simply to feel certain.
Possible difficulty
Impatience with uncertainty that makes the process of searching for an answer feel like a mistake.
Focus
Your own feelings about the choice, which may be easier to hear through quiet reflection than in a rush.
Reflection question
Am I rushing this decision only because I find uncertainty difficult?
Two of Swords — Reversed
General
Overall meaning
Maintaining the previous balance is becoming more difficult. One interpretation deepens the impasse: information, doubts, or outside pressure become overwhelming, and every choice seems wrong.
Another interpretation points to the end of avoidance. Uncomfortable truths come into view, a decision emerges, or it becomes possible to move from reflection to action. The difference depends on whether new clarity helps you decide or only adds to your confusion for now. Waite's historical list also introduces the theme of insincerity.
Possible support
The opportunity to step away from pressure temporarily, regain your balance, and then return to the decision.
Possible difficulty
Trying to account for everything at once while fear of the consequences makes every option seem unacceptable.
Focus
Which information is genuinely necessary and which only adds to confusion and pressure.
Reflection questions
- Which pieces of information would actually change my choice?
- What am I postponing because I fear the consequences?
Relationships
Overall meaning
Held-back tension becomes harder to conceal. In a romantic relationship, this may involve painful clarity, continued avoidance of a conversation, or growing distance.
When choosing a partner, both options may seem unsuitable. In an existing relationship, the difficulty sometimes lies in balancing the relationship with other commitments; postponing the decision increases anxiety.
Among friends and family, the card can suggest either pressure to take sides or the beginning of reconciliation after a long-standing argument. In the latter case, more changes than the outward silence: a willingness to talk and forgive begins to emerge.
Possible support
A renewed conversation that makes room for understanding and forgiveness.
Possible difficulty
Trying to reconcile loved ones who are unwilling to compromise and who place their tension on the person mediating.
Focus
Your involvement in someone else's conflict: whether it truly helps or merely turns you into a messenger for mutual grievances.
Reflection questions
- Is my involvement in someone else's argument actually helping?
- Am I ready to return to the conversation without repeating old accusations?
Work and study
Overall meaning
A work-related decision can no longer be postponed with ease. There may be overwhelm when choosing between offers or growing conflicts within the team.
Another perspective involves greater clarity: negotiations become possible, and you need to separate your own position from loyalty to the people involved in the dispute.
Possible support
The ability to negotiate on the substance of an issue, guided by principles rather than demands to take someone's side.
Possible difficulty
There is already plenty of information, but its sheer volume increases anxiety and makes the career decision feel irreversible.
Focus
Unresolved circumstances surrounding a workplace conflict and your own position within it.
Reflection questions
- Is comparing the offers any further actually helping me?
- Which principles do I want to stand by at work?
Money and resources
Overall meaning
The financial reality is becoming clearer, making it possible to begin addressing a postponed question. In another interpretation, new information only adds to the overwhelm: the amounts and terms are difficult to take in as a whole.
Possible support
Breaking a financial question into smaller parts instead of trying to absorb all the information at once.
Possible difficulty
Incomplete information and unclear offer terms that make a considered financial decision difficult.
Focus
The details of the terms you are considering accepting: unclear provisions need clarification before you agree.
Reflection questions
- Which terms do I still not understand?
- What part of this financial question can I calmly work through right now?
Wellbeing and self-care
Overall meaning
The need to make a decision may feel overwhelming, confusing, and emotionally tense. In an interpretation focused on moving beyond denial, there may also be relief: you no longer need to pretend that a difficult issue does not exist.
Possible support
Stepping away from a tense interaction and restoring your inner balance before continuing.
Possible difficulty
Postponing a decision out of fear of the outcome, only to find that the delay adds confusion and stress rather than bringing calm.
Focus
Feelings that are difficult to acknowledge: the desire for clarity may coexist with a fear of opening up.
Reflection questions
- Does postponing the decision actually make me feel calmer?
- Which of my feelings am I struggling to acknowledge?
Personal growth
Overall meaning
Prolonged indecision can become an opportunity to reconsider familiar beliefs. In Elliot Adam's interpretation, the card invites you to move beyond an inner standstill and reengage with life; rigid views can prevent you from noticing new possibilities.
Possible support
Openness to new ideas and the freedom to change an earlier perspective without defending it at all costs.
Possible difficulty
Fear of the outcome that makes postponing a decision easier than putting your choice into practice.
Focus
What truly matters to you in this choice, beneath conflicting thoughts and feelings.
Reflection questions
- Which of my beliefs could I reconsider?
- What truly matters to me in this choice?
Roles in a spread
Position examples
A position gives the card a question, such as what helps or what gets in the way. That question shapes how you read its meaning.
Two of Swords — Upright
Situation
An agreement holds without the underlying disagreements being resolved; a choice or confrontation remains on hold.
Influence
Someone else's conflict and divided loyalties: the expectation that you must support one side makes the choice more difficult.
Motivation
A desire to preserve peace and control without facing the unpleasant consequences of choosing.
Support
A neutral position from which you can listen carefully to opposing sides.
Obstacle
Refusing to acknowledge an uncomfortable part of the situation, leaving the decision repeatedly postponed.
Focus of attention
Feelings excluded from the decision to maintain an appearance of complete objectivity.
Next step
Pause the argument and consider both sides before deciding where you stand.
Possible development
If avoidance continues, the pause may turn into prolonged stagnation rather than lead to a decision on its own.
Two of Swords — Reversed
Situation
The previous standstill becomes unstable: greater clarity pushes toward a choice, or mounting pressure increases confusion.
Influence
Pressure from people expecting a decision or mediation can make it harder to understand the situation for yourself.
Motivation
Fear of what will follow a decision and a desire to postpone facing it a little longer.
Support
A willingness to consider a new perspective when your previous way of thinking is no longer helping you decide.
Obstacle
Overwhelm and the conviction that no acceptable solution exists, even after prolonged consideration.
Focus of attention
Something that has already become obvious but is still being left out of the decision.
Next step
When the essence of the decision is already clear, move toward carrying it out. If you've lost your balance, first step back and regain your composure.
Possible development
If the delay continues, the decision may pass to other people or be imposed by circumstances.
Combination examples
Card combinations are in development. For now, here are a few examples.
Two of Swords + Justice
Two of Swords ( upright) + Justice ( upright)
- Example question:
- How can I approach a difficult decision?
- Example interpretation:
The pairing contrasts avoidance with a willingness to acknowledge the truth and accept personal responsibility. Justice offers another way to approach what the Two of Swords leaves unresolved.
Two of Swords + The Moon
Two of Swords ( upright) + The Moon ( upright)
- Example question:
- What is preventing me from seeing the situation more clearly?
- Example interpretation:
This combination strengthens the theme of self-deception and reluctance to face the truth. Uncertainty persists because an uncomfortable part of the picture remains overlooked.
Two of Swords + Nine of Wands
Two of Swords ( upright) + Nine of Wands ( upright)
- Example question:
- Why is it difficult to let down my defenses?
- Example interpretation:
Both cards emphasize emotional guardedness and a defensive stance. Such defenses may prevent someone from allowing in what they have been trying to keep at a distance.
Two of Swords + Four of Pentacles
Two of Swords ( upright) + Four of Pentacles ( upright)
- Example question:
- What is keeping the situation at a standstill?
- Example interpretation:
The pairing emphasizes blocked movement and stagnation. Maintaining the current position becomes the focus of the interpretation, rather than resolving the disagreement.
Reading example
An imagined one-card reading shows how the meanings above can apply to a question. This is one possible interpretation.
Two of Swords — Upright
Situation:
I've been offered a new job. Everything feels familiar in my current workplace, while the new position looks interesting. I've gone over the pros and cons many times, but I keep postponing the decision.
Question:
What will help me decide about a job?
-
Card drawn:
Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help» and getting Two of Swords (upright).
Interpretation:
The Two of Swords shows two options held in balance. Here, it helps to distinguish between what you still need to learn about the job and what you already know but find difficult to weigh.
One possible step is to clarify the missing details and compare the offers based on what matters to you. The pause then serves the decision instead of simply extending the discussion.
Two of Swords — Reversed
Situation:
I've been offered a new job. Everything feels familiar in my current workplace, while the new position looks interesting. I've gone over the pros and cons many times, but I keep postponing the decision.
Question:
What will help me decide about a job?
-
Card drawn:
Imagine drawing a card for the position «What Will Help» and getting Two of Swords (reversed).
Interpretation:
The reversed Two of Swords may highlight the overwhelm of endless comparisons. After so many discussions, another opinion will not necessarily bring you closer to a decision; fear of making a mistake may be getting in the way of choosing.
Here, you can stop collecting advice and separate the job conditions that genuinely matter from the desire to eliminate every doubt in advance. Clarify what you truly need to know before choosing, rather than searching for one more argument in favor of each side.
Yes / No
Two of Swords — Upright
Why this answer
An unresolved choice keeps the situation at a standstill: no direction has been settled on, and movement is suspended. This is the basis for a negative answer under the current circumstances.
A clarification
If the question involves an important decision that must be made immediately, the card suggests not forcing it before you feel ready to choose.
A question to consider
What exactly am I still unable to decide?
Two of Swords — Reversed
Why this answer
Avoiding feelings and a painful choice keeps things at a standstill. The reversed card intensifies the difficulty, so the answer remains negative.
A clarification
When facing outside pressure or intense confusion, it is worth first clarifying what is preventing you from making your own decision. In this interpretation, moving forward without that clarity carries a risk of regret.
A question to consider
What am I finding difficult to acknowledge about my feelings?
Correspondences
Connections with numbers, elements and other symbols add depth to the card’s imagery. They can differ between traditions.
Number — II (2)
Duality and the comparison of two positions. In this card, the number emphasizes a balance in which neither side has yet gained the upper hand.
Element — Air
The realm of thought, discernment, and rational choice. For the Two of Swords, this means weighing opposing arguments.
Astrology — Moon in Libra
Lunar sensitivity meets Libra's pursuit of balance and harmony. This combination is associated with diplomacy, but also with making concessions to preserve peace.
Tree of Life — Chokmah in Yetzirah
Chokmah, the second sephirah, is considered within the World of Formation. For the Two of Swords, this represents equal and opposing forces: they balance one another but may also keep the conflict unresolved.
